The Chain pumps on lower gun deck of HMS Victory

The Chain Pumps ensured that the Victory did not take on too much sea water. It pumped water from the bilge of the ship upwards to the top deck where it could run back into the sea.

Working efficiently, these pumps were capable of removing approximately 1,350 gallons (6,143 litres) of water per minute from the bilges.
