White Horses The ‘lost’ Puffin Picture Book. In the late autumn of 1939 Eric Ravilious set off on a whirlwind painting tour of the chalk figures on the Downs. It was for a book, that sadly never made it beyond dummy stage. These original paintings, with black & white illustrations by Alice Pattullo, based on Ravilious’s dummy, will finally see the light of day in their intended format, a reimagined Puffin Picture Book.
