Reposted from @pickletopilaf Chaaltar Tok I don't know if Chaalta or Elephant Apple is had this way in any other community. For Bengalis, it is a sheer mouthwatering delicacy, a khatta-meetha or sweet-n-sour runny, syrupy dish in which sliced Chaalta pieces are cooked in a sugar syrup with while jeera and kalonji in a little mustard oil used for tempering. A pinch of salt and a dash of lime juice is added to make it heavenly! The best way to finish a lunch on a sultry, sweaty, icky summer afternoon. Especially in this month of Bhadra, when the heat is of a different kind (Bongs call this month Pocha Bhadro because of the gloomy heat that almost resembles a sauna!). Just sucking out the juicy Chaalta while the sweet-n-sour (the sourness is more than its sweet) syrup drips off the pieces... Bliss ❤️! . .
