young John Doe is without a doubt, a complete enigma. We know nothing about the artist who’s tugging at our hearts with his anguished, affecting voice on one of his recent tracks, ‘fix me’. I suppose that’s why he chose to give himself a moniker inspired by “John Doe”, the common nomenclature assigned to unknown identities and concealed names. All it says on his Soundcloud profile is: “this is a music journal of somewhat shitty quality songs I create in GarageBand. enjoy.” Enjoy we most certainly do to hushed, sorrowful ‘fix me’, a sparse bedroom piano hymnal with gravelly stirring vocals and much heart piercing ennui. It’s raw and powerful, despite its understated, austere nature. In the days since we discovered ‘fix me’, young John Doe has also posted a new bedroom pop track named ‘its not ur fault’, which you can stream below. Chamber pop with mournful organs, carrying slivers of early Perfume Genius, meets the atmospheric tension of Brent Fayaiz’s dark haunting R&B plus some Frank Ocean introspection. Is bedroom chamber R&B a thing? Because it is now! Also of note on young John Doe’s Soundcloud are Okay and ‘i’ve been awake for 24 hrs’, both of which can be streamed below. Or, you can head to his Soundcloud for more, here. Whomsoever this John Doe is, he sure knows how to latch on to our hearts with his wrenching ballads.
