smooth rnb and rap that is perfect for vibing to.
young John Doe is without a doubt, a complete enigma. We know nothing about the artist who’s tugging at our hearts with his anguished, affecting voice on one of his recent tracks, ‘fix me’. I suppose that’s why he chose to give himself a moniker inspired by “John Doe”, the common nomenclature assigned to unknown identities and concealed names. All it says on his Soundcloud profile is: “this is a music journal of somewhat shitty quality songs I create in GarageBand. enjoy.” Enjoy we most certainly do to hushed, sorrowful ‘fix me’, a sparse bedroom piano hymnal with gravelly stirring vocals and much heart piercing ennui. It’s raw and powerful, despite its understated, austere nature. In the days since we discovered ‘fix me’, young John Doe has also posted a new bedroom pop track named ‘its not ur fault’, which you can stream below. Chamber pop with mournful organs, carrying slivers of early Perfume Genius, meets the atmospheric tension of Brent Fayaiz’s dark haunting R&B plus some Frank Ocean introspection. Is bedroom chamber R&B a thing? Because it is now! Also of note on young John Doe’s Soundcloud are Okay and ‘i’ve been awake for 24 hrs’, both of which can be streamed below. Or, you can head to his Soundcloud for more, here. Whomsoever this John Doe is, he sure knows how to latch on to our hearts with his wrenching ballads.
grab my hand & drag me down, i lost my step and floated out into the open, but you keep me grounded
So excited to share my new song with everyone! After working on new music for the past couple years, I decided to depart from my previous Synthwave/Electropop sound and go into a more R&B/Pop direction for my debut EP. The lead single is called "Best Friend." The track takes on a 1990s chill R&B/Pop sound, reminiscent of the Spice Girls, TLC and George Michael - who had all influenced the production of the song.

Mmmmph, Paradisia’s new song may be named History Made, but I think it’s safe to say that this British band is making a history of their own with their misty sublime pop. History Made is a chill soothing beauty, chiffon and diaphanous. It’s a dreamy balm for the heart that carries the soft whiskers of Rhye, the soulful vocal enchantment of Jessie Ware, and the gauzy whirl of Men I Trust, but cushioned by a tender, glassy caress that leaves us tingling in mellow bliss. Grab the R&B pop gem from iTunes, here. Keep up with the trio via their website, here.
We were ecstatic last year to find out that a gifted group of musicians known as Cassette Tapes reside right here in San Francisco. And we were quick to bestow some love on them when they melted us with their gooey smooth cooing on Forgiveness. So, it surprised us to find out that we missed out on a new gem from the duo last month. Listen to Cassette Tapes’ This Year, a dusky glimmering alt-R&B and chill velutinous pop ballad with dreamy electronic production. The song, about habits and trying to be better, is Cassette Tapes’ first release of the year. It’s a fine way to kick off their year, and a fine statement when it comes to the pair’s growing clout. This Year can also be streamed on Spotify, here.
The thought of teflon usually brings to mind something tough and resistant, hard and strong. Yet Cleveland’s Teflon Sega renders us a melted, liquefied mess every time he serenades us with one of his R&B soul ballads. Those feelings bubble to surface yet again as Teflon Sega melts us with his creamy, satiny cooing on new single Closure, a poignant lament of a dreamy electro and velvety R&B track featuring sonic magician YLXR on foggy atmospheric, dusky surreal production duty. Tragic romance and aching heartbreak take a hold of us as we dissolve into this pillowy, dreamy affair. While the closure we seek in life might always evade us, at least we can seek comfort in Teflon Sega and drift into the night feeling a little bit more complete. Closure is a free download, here.
