Dussehra celebrations: Uri attack martyrs remembered in Chandigarh

A Dussehra marked by its usual gaiety and fervour was punctuated by a poignant moment. Punjab governor and UT administrator VP Singh Badnore along with local member of parliament Kirron Kher and David Lelliott, order of British empire, British deputy high commissioner, paid floral tributes to martyrs of the September 18 Uri at the celebrations in Sector 17 Parade Ground.

The governor also went to Sector 46 celebrations organised by Shri Sanatan Dharam Dussehra Committee, who also dedicated the festival celebration to the martyrs. The committee burnt the tallest Ravana effigy at 85-ft in Sector 46.

CURIOUS FOREIGNERS

A reasonably large number of foreigners were seen at various Dussehra celebration spots in the city. Curious to understand the significance of the festival, Jim, 35 and his partner Irene, 30, who were visiting the city to attend his sister’s wedding, ensured that they came well before time at Sector 17 to interact with Ramlila artistes. “The concept of victory of good over evil in inspiring,” Jim said.

TRAFFIC SNARLS CHANDIGARH

Traffic movement was the worst-hit in Sectors 17, 19, 20, 22, 26, 29, 34, 40, 41, 45, 47 and nearby colonies. Manimajra, Hallomajra, Dadu Majra, Mauli Jagran, Maloya and Bapu Dham saw jams due to pedestrians.

IN SAS NAGAR, EFFIGY OF TERRORISTS BURNT

SAS NAGAR: At the Phase-8 Dussehra celebration, organisers said they burnt the effigy of terrorists in addition to the statues of Ravana (51-ft), Meghnad and Kumbhkaran (41-ft each). The event at this ground has been for running for 39 years and SAS Nagar deputy commissioner DS Mangat was the chief guest at the event. SAS Nagar Dussehra committee president Madhu Bhushan and Congress MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu was also present . The festival was celebrated at 11 other places.

Kapil to ring the bell during Eden Test

Kolkata, Sep 26  India’s first World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev will ring the bell, to be installed at the Eden Gardens, on the first day of India’s second Test against New Zealand, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly said on Monday.

This match will be India’s 250th on home ground.

“Kapil Dev will ring the bell,” the former India captain told reporters here.

The bell, resembling the one at Lord’s, is likely to be installed on Tuesday. Made of brass with a top coating of silver, it has been brought from Chandigarh.

A gold coin will be used for toss, and Ganguly informed the coin will be used for every match played at the Eden henceforth.

“The same coin will be used for the toss every time a match is played at the Eden Gardens,” he said.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur is expected to arrive in the city on October 1, the second day of the Test match. Thakur will hand over the specially-minted silver coins on Day 3 of the five-day affair.

The coin will be embossed with “250” and will be presented to former Bengal captains as well.

Ganguly also said the wicket at the Eden will turn as the match progresses.

“It will be a good wicket. There has been a lot of rain so the ball will turn slowly as the match wears on,” he said.
