If you want to have a Diet Coke, have a Diet Coke. If you want to run a marathon, that sounds super hard. But, okay.
I honestly thought this commercial was a spoof at first and soon then realized this was a real Diet Coke ad. In this ad, it is very clear the type of audience Coca-Cola is trying to target, that young trendy 20 something individual who is just starting to make their own life choices. Over the last few years, millennials have been notorious for living by this “You only live once” mantra. I just found it pretty hysterical that Coke’s marketing team took this idea and ran with it by comparing drinking an artificially sweetened carbonated beverage to running a marathon. With more people today concerned about the ingredients that are being put in our food and opting for healthier drinks like La Croix (flavored sparkling waters), it is no surprise Coca-Cola is trying target millennials to have a “you do you” mentality and not to worry about the things we ingest.
I do find this marketing strategy to be pretty clever. However, how can public health ad campaigns do the same and focus on the major health issues we face in this country such as diabetes, obesity and, opioids abuse and be able to target that same trendy 20 something, that is just starting to make his or her own life choices?
