Advice on anyone changing courses? I'm in my first year of speech pathology course and I'm thinking of doing a double degree of psychology and law (I looked at the units and I've done most of the first year units for psychology) :/ I'm also thinking about how the latter suits me more? The more I delve into speech pathology the more I realise it is something that may not suit me. I enjoyed social studies in HS but my school didn't offer politics and law so I didn't get to do it despite wanting to
Hey there! Psychology and law sounds like a fantastic combination!! As for advice for changing courses
As for actually changing degrees, the administration process isn’t too hard, and the information is usually freely available, or if you’re confused, you can always speak to a student/careers advisor, and they’ll be able to help you quite easily.
Just a basic reminder to make sure you know the requirements for changing degrees, and get all your applications in before the deadline!
I think this post about choosing a degree is relevant even though it’s not your very first degree, so do have a read here! Make sure you’re sure about your intentions and motivations first.
Also, I had someone ask me about changing degrees before, so also have a read of this ask here!
Sit in with a few lectures in law and second year psychology!! No one really checks in a lecture theatre of hundreds of people, so take the chance to see whether or not the subject matter is something you can see yourself going through :D
Ask some people who are in the lecture theatre how they find the degree and what they find interesting about it.
Even better is if you can find someone’s already working with a degree in psych/law and ask them how the degree was overall and what areas were particularly difficult.
Also! It’s super important to know what your job prospects are like when you change or choose a degree! Although you may find the degree is something is more suited to you, the job may be harder to obtain.
Along those lines, make sure that the job at the end of the day that you’ll get is something you can see yourself doing (or at least something more rewarding to you than being a speech pathologist)
It seems like you’ve already done it, but I’d just thought I’d mention to check whether any of the courses that you’ve done so far count as credit for your new degree.
Changing degrees isn’t that hard to actually carry out as long as you’re sure it’s what you want to do. I hope these tips help!! Let me know if you want to know anything more specific :D
