There was an energy in the air around the Fort, malicious. Wolves catching scent of prey, and lying in wait for the moment of vulnerability. Word had spread of Caesar’s invitation to the Courier, and the excitement to see what the living legend looked like was impossible to hide. Smiles turned to grins with too-sharp teeth when the Courier stepped off the boat, and cruel comments spoken just too loud to be private were a constant buzz in the air.
The legionaries were all too welcoming of the woman courier.
It was then, cutting through it all, that a chubby pug with a face as ugly as sin had run through the legs of some of the soldiers, tripping up a few as she went. All fat and soft edges next to the lean hounds bred for war, the dog waddled it’s way through the crowd to greet the new scent. It stopped just inches from Elle, just barely stopping herself from crashing, and begun her investigation.
Sniff, sniff, sniff. Bark.
