I am 100% Italian and I can assure you that this tradition is not real, traditionally basil would be kept on window sills because it chases away negative energies and evil spirits. That's all.

I still find the idea cute and the way it's used in this scene is cute too and even though TenPrem are absolutely endgame, it's hard to hate Changma, right now. He will probably do something wrong in the future, as always.
