ITZPAPALOTL: NEO-FOLKLORE
Itzpapalotl is a magical realist piece set in the Mojave Desert directed by Chantel Beam. With strong themes of feminism and colonialism, this film was written as an homage to traditional Native American folktales, in attempt to revive the spirit of storytelling.
Centering around a young healer, Mara, and her rabbit companion, Itzpapalotl, the narrative delves into mysticism, psychedelia, and the overall force of Mother Nature, with an emphasis on the power of women.
This original screenplay was written by Jack Donald Muller, a long time collaborator with Ms. Beam.
