summary: Chanyeol drabble where he ditches you to play with your niece and you find that really, really, really nice.
Your thoughts had never really strayed in this particular direction.
You were young, and the subjects of children and marriage and starting a family hadn’t come to the forefront of your mind since you were a young girl, planning your dream wedding from the old clippings of your mothers magazines. And yet, as you sat there, leaning against you kitchen counter, coffee warming your hands, you were.
Your cousin had dropped off their niece the day before, her usual daycare closed for the holiday. And with them not being able to get out of work for the day, you were more than happy to offer your home for the young girl, even extending the offer to an overnight stay. Your niece, Kyung Jae, was a sweet girl who had recently turned five, and was beginning to have crushes, but only barely. She was clingy, and energetic, but she also knew when to calm down and play well by herself when she needed to. However, the very moment Chanyeol had come home from practice yesterday, there was no chance of Jae playing alone.
She and Chanyeol had each other wrapped around each other’s fingers, although Jae had been a bit intimidated at first. She had hid behind you on the couch, regardless of the fact she could no longer see the cartoon you had been watching together, and when you stood to greet Chanyeol, she had buried herself in the cushions. That hadn’t lasted long, however, and soon it was like you had never existed to Kyung Jae (which, admittedly, you were a bit miffed about).
There were a lot of things that you loved about Chanyeol. His smile, his laugh, his height (although he often teased you about your own, his lanky limbs did often come in handy), his personality in general- the way he would sing you to sleep on your worst nights, or how warm and comforting his hugs were. You loved the way he would play his guitar quietly late at night, and more often than not you would stay up to listen, picturing long, nimble fingers dancing up and down the neck of the guitar, plucking and strumming the strings gently.
You also loved the way he could get along with just about anyone. He was impossible to hate, even more impossible not to love. That was probably one of the reasons Jae had warmed up to him so quickly, and the reason why you couldn’t wipe the smile off of your face.
Chanyeol would pick Jae up and swing her around the room, making airplane noises, or even lifting her onto his broad shoulders and acting as a noble knight out to protect and guide his “gorgeous, fun-sized little princess.” He had ditched you at the dinner table in favor of sitting next to your niece, argued with you about the number of cookies she could have, and debated how late her bedtime should be. Despite all of this, you didn’t mind at all. Your absolute favorite moment of the night had been when you came out of the shower to find Chanyeol passed out on the couch, long legs draped over the arm of the couch, right arm hanging off of the side, looking squished beyond reason, but still content. Curled up half on his chest ad haf against the back of the couch was Kyung Jae, with fistfuls of your boyfriend’s shirt, head buried into the crook of his neck, sleeping peacefully. Chanyeol’s other arm was holding her tight to his side, probably to stop her from rolling around and risking falling off of the couch.
Your heart melted. It really made you begin to think about what you wanted in the future, and you began to realize, this was it. This was what you wanted. You wanted Chanyeol, and you wanted a life with him, and children, and many more years of heartwarming sights like this. Not now, or for a few years yet, but someday.
So of course you took pictures, staring at them for a few more minutes, inwardly freaking out about how adorable they were, before you leaned over the arm of the couch to wake Chanyeol. “Babe,” you whispered, tapping his shoulder a bit. “Yeollie, you have to wake up.”
He groaned softly, shifting a bit before opening his eyes. Once his bleary eyes adjusted, he focused back in on you and smiled drowsily. “Hey,” he whispered, still grinning.
“C’mon, get up and we’ll tuck Jae into bed.” Laughing softly, you started to clean up the area from the earlier escapades. “And then I’ll be sure to tuck you in too.” You teased.
“Ha, ha.” he wheezed sarcastically, shuffling himself towards the edge carefully, adjusting Jae against his shoulder so he didn’t wake her. He bent backwards at an obviously uncomfortable angle, slouching at the knees, to press a soft kiss against your temple. “Go get in bed, I’ll be there in a minute, alright?”
And ten minutes later, Jae was all tucked in comfortably in the guest room, the nightlight plugged in and the door left half open. Chanyeol slipped into the bedroom, and all but flung himself at the bed. He didn’t say another word, just shuffled under the covers, wrapped his arms around you tightly, and pulled you close. Face buried in your hair, you could feel him press one more drowsy kiss against your skull and faintly hear the “Love you, night.” He whispered, before the both of drifted off to sleep.
Your thoughts had never really strayed in this particular direction.
You were young, and the subjects of children and marriage and starting a family hadn’t come to the forefront of your mind since you were a young girl, planning your dream wedding from the old clippings of your mothers magazines. And yet, as you sat there the next morning, leaning against you kitchen counter, coffee warming your hands, you were. Moments like these were the most important to you; the moments where the realization struck you hard enough to make you lose your breath. The realization that you really, truly, irrevocably and probably irrationally loved Park Chanyeol with everything you had to offer, and that at this point, you couldn’t see any part of your future without him in it.
And as he glanced away from the pink nail polish he had allowed Jae to ‘beautify’ him with, your eyes met and he smiled. A smile full of life, and love for you, and the same wishes for the future; you knew that he felt the same way. And suddenly, just as someone falls asleep, slowly, then all at once, you fell in love all over again.
