Why Ozai is not a bad character

This seems like an outrageous take but hear me out.

My first topic of discussion is how horrible ozai's childhood must have been. His father was Azulon and the way he treated Zuko and Azura was probably has a direct correlation to how his own childhood must have been. Like that scene where his dad slapped for spilling a cup of water. He also has burns all over his body from his father, you just don't see them in the show. Or the comics. Trust me. Because there's evidence that clearly points to this.

Second, about Zuko's whole scar. 13 year old Zuko is a known deceptive, manipulative, evil worm. Think about how quickly he switched sides from the "evil" side to team avatar (suspicious). Also, it's so obvious that his scar is fake and that he reapplies it every morning and night. You can even see cosmetics in the background, and there's one scene where it's not even on his face. like could they have made it any more obvious, yet all you LOVE manipulative and lying Zuko.

Next let's talk about URSA. OH MY GOD URSA. When firebird ozai threatened to mistreat Zuko to Ursa, he was just trying to defend himself from his evil manipulative child to his equally manipulative wife. She mistreated her children and him and escaped the second she saw the chance, without a second thought towards her family. Also, the thing that's most ignored by this ignorant fandom, is how she threatened his parents that she would release fire nation noble secrets unless she could marry their son, Ozai, who was terrified of her. Also, the way he proved his love by sacrificing his own parents for her in the comic "North and South".

For Azula, I think it goes without saying how insane Azula is, not to mention how ungrateful she is towards her father in the last episode after she's made firelord even though she's not even that talented, Ozai's words not mine. Ozai also had a good reason to mistreat Azula, seeing how much she mistreated the one he loved, Mai. Even in Azula's childhood she would lie to her parents, even her father even though he clearly cared about her and was a very good parent.

Not much can be said about Iron, considering we don't see much of their relationship. Consider how negligent and uncaring Iron was towards his brother after he lost his nephew, Lu Ten. Iron instead used this to bring attention to himself. He also betrayed Ozai, putting his manipulative nephew Zuko over his own brother.

Next is Mai, she lied to the firelord to get on his good side, and in the end just betrayed him to go with Zuko and avatar. Mai might be the worst character in the show, seeing as she betrayed not only one of her closest friends, but also Ozai, the man who truly loved her. Not to mention, the only reason she liked Zuko was because he joined the avatar and she believed his side would win in the end. Because all she ever cared about was making herself look good.

AANG!! Despite the fact that he had unresolved feelings for the firelord, he still took down his love and deep down should feel ultimately guilty.

Finally, Ozai is extremely attractive. Let's start with his lovely, clear skin and his high sculpted cheekbones and beautiful glossy olive skin. Not to mention his beautiful golden shining eyes, sculpted into the perfect almond shape. He was especially attractive in the New live action. Considering his beautiful ribbed abs, his long Lucious, black locks, and even in the final battle how he still looks put together and attractive and HOT.

We need to talk about one final point, how he just wanted his kingdom and his people to be the best it could possibly. All of his actions were just him looking out for his people. He mistreated some people but he could have been a lot worse. And he was a good king. He's just very patriotic in his love for Agni kai, his people, and the color red. and bonfires. and birds. He especially loved the beautiful sight of grey smoke falling over the beautiful, white, melting snow whenever he attacked the southern water tribe.

Also he is a good king.

Chanzula honestly has the potential to be way more interesting than people give it credit for- I mean, imagine being in Chan's shoes and finding out that the cute, but kind of unhinged, gal who's been flirting with you is a PRINCESS! I definitely would like to see something like that played out in a fanfic at some point.

It does. :) People like to reduce Chan to only the jock guy but when have the Avatar characters ever been 1 dimensional? It would be cute to see Chan realizing who he was flirting with and trying to win her back. It could be done like a romcom or it can be more angsty. Chan could be the guy who helps her feel like she fits in. Chan could also help her learn to talk to people which would be good fic material. And while all of this happens he could learn to be less shallow or we as the audience would get to see a new and sensitive or smart side of him. It would be even better if it turned out that Chan wasnt as much of a ladies man as everyone thinks and it turns out that Azula was the first person he tried dating instead of just flirting with.

Okaaayyy, so we were talking about ATLA couples with someone. And before I even said anything, this Person said everything that I (and most likely most of us) would totally and fully agree. What were those things?? Here we go:

Azula and Sokka are the only ones I really find good together. They are remarkably intelligent and they are interesting. The best characters in the show.

Sokka just doesn’t fit with Suki. Suki would be good with Zuko. They would be not boring. Zuko needs someone like her.

Yue and Sokka are also not good. I can only imagine him with Azula.

Ohh, and Azula would be also good with Chan. They both look very good, beautiful and handsome. Though Chan's personality should change a little bit then they would be very good too.

Sooo, this person is a fan (and the reason why I started watching ATLA all those years ago) BUT not IN THE fandom. Just watching and observing. And this is the opinion of this person. And I agree with all points. From Sokka to Zuko to Chan…

Of course everyone is free to ship what they want to, but I think there're things that everyone can see. And these are one's I'd say.

i still haven’t decided who would be paula in the crazy ex au that I’ll never write but I’ve come up with a greg hear me out

here’s everyone so far: rebecca is azula. this is the one that started the au & it is also the only one I feel strongly about. I will truly die on my rebecca bunch-azula parallels hill. katara is audra levine. except instead of going from frienemies to friends & almost kissing in vegas they go from fienemies to lovers & actually kiss <3 this one is mainly just because audra lives a parallel life to rebecca like katara does to azula but idk about the actual fittingness. ty lee is valencia. this one requires no explanation, it’s almost too perfect. mai is heather. also requires no explanation. obviously ursa is naomi

i know this is boring maybe but chan is josh. he represents the idealized conventionally attractive everyman our hero fixates on. it just works to me.

now the new one. sokka is greg. i realize they’re different in many ways but also. i was watching last night & it just hit me that greg gives sokka vibes sometimes & I could see azula initially just using sokka / not thinking much of him but because he’s nice to her when no one else is & keeps giving her chances & has a certain charm they start sleeping together & she gradually catches feelings against her initial better judgement & they have fun together. how this works with katara as audra idk but adjustments could be made to make it work I’m sure idk

She's so cute I really liked this idea with him. And he looks good. And I also think if Bryke's idea of Azula having an arranged marriage would've became real, it should've been a more mature version of Chan maybe... It obviously wouldn't have been Sokka for sure...sadly

There's actually good Chanzula fanfics, the writers go more in depth with his character, he's nice and coward xD haha

Well, I am glad that there are good writers out there that have expanded on that high school jock. There was space to grow his character to however you wanted him to be, as long as you didn’t neglect how he was in canon. I don’t see anything for that ship personally but by all means that ship is yours to command!
