Hi is this anything
I knew Star Trek (2009) truly had a grasp on the characters when the first scene with James Kirk showed a little ten year old blonde shit in Nowhere, Iowa driving a vintage car off a cliff to death metal and then the next scene was little ten year old Spock with the doe-y-ist big wet brown eyes you've ever scene beating up a bully for insulting his mommy
Something I think about a lot is how Rick Riordan very rarely uses "girlfriend/boyfriend" to refer to Percy and Annabeth within their perspectives. They're so intertwined, even Annabeth says in hoh that the word boyfriend isn't strong enough, because Percy was a part of her. They are a singular soul, too wrapped around each others' fates that regular labels are far too weak for them. But, Rick Riordan uses "boyfriend" a lot in Nico and Wills perspectives, not because they love each other less than percabeth, but to show how much the word means to them. Nico uses it any chance he gets- "his boyfriend," "he actually had a boyfriend," because Nico has never been able to say that before. Their struggle with their queer identities mixed with Nico's catholic guilt and chronic everyone-hates-me disease makes the fact that he has someone to call his actual boyfriend so much more important to his character development.
"They were CRAZY for this" and it's just Spock calling Kirk by his first name
I have a Star Trek hot take. Zachary Quinto is my favorite Spock.
Now he doesn't have to be yours, and I have no possible hint of disdain for any other Spock actor. I respect Nimoy to the highest degree, and though I haven't watched much of SNW, Ethan Peck seems to be doing a fine job. But I just rewatched the AOS movies and I want to talk about Quinto's Spock.
The storyline itself is my favorite portrayl of Spock. The way it clearly shows the inner-tormoil of Spock's human side conflicting with his Vulcan side in a way we've never before seen in Star Trek.
He's vulnerable. He's an asshole. He's overwhelmed 200% of the time. He's a mommas boy. He's gay as fuck. He somehow pulls off the haircut?
But the way Quinto plays him too. The way as you watch the movies you start to notice how his mouth quirks up a little when he's amused, or his eyes sparkle when he's excited, or the barely concealed break in his voice when he's hurt or very emotional.
Theres just little things I am absolute obsessed with because when he's surrounded by humans it comes off as absolutely no emotion at all but when compared to his Vulcan counterparts it is everything.
I was rewatching Beyond today, and besides appreciating the subtle character arc we see him go through as he expresses more and more emotions, but when he is injured, I was absolutely riveted by the way Quinto played a Vulcan who was clearly in pain but trying to preform at peak performance. His level voice starts collecting tiny wavers and breaks that just feel like you, the audience, knows him personally enough to recognize This is not what Vulcans do, and This is not what Spock does, and Yet he's doing it anyway. Because he's human. Because he's in pain. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk there will not be another because I'm running into traffic because of this stupid guy.
Star Trek: Lower Decks should be grouped with the best written Star Trek shows but most fans aren't ready for that conversation
