The TodoFam in BNHA Vol. 2 Chap. 013 - Rescue Training (救助訓れ Kyūjo Kunre)
Release date: October 6, 2014 (WSJ Issue 45, 2014)
Let’s look at what the manga shows us first:
Kirishima Eijirō ‘Hadede tsuēttsuttara yappa Todoroki to Bakugō da na.’
切島鋭児郎「派手で強えっつったらやっぱ轟と爆豪だな。」
Kirishima Eijirō “Flashy and strong, it’s definitely Todoroki and Bakugō.”
Observation notes:
Shōto is the only student shown sleeping on the ride to the training location, the “unforeseen simulation joint” (ウソ の 災害 や 事故 ルーム 'Uso no Saigai ya Jiko ROOM’, lit. “Unbelieveable Disasters Room”) and will apparently keep on sleeping despite the noise Bakugō makes. On the other side Kirishima, who has been shown being impressed by Shōto’s ability (and Bakugō’s) during the battle trial arc comments that the ones flashy and strong are Todoroki and Bakugō.
Translation notes:
Kirishima is the first student to say Shōto’s name and we can see he calls him ‘Todoroki’ (轟), in short he calls him by surname but doesn’t add any suffix. He does so for all of his classmates. On a general line, when calling someone, in order to be polite, you should use the surname plus a suffix (-sama, -san, -kun…) so Kirishima comes out as less formal/more casual/rude when talking with/about his classmates.
English version notes:
This is not really related to Shōto but the English version mistook Thirteen for a male and referred to Thirteen as such when instead Thirteen is female. That is due to Japanese using neutral words to refer to Thirteen and English instead needing gendered words... and assuming that since we couldn’t see Thirteen’s face or body this would make them default male.
Extra notes:
So in this chapter we are introduced to USJ, which is basically a giant area in which disasters are simulated. To continue in chap 108/109 at the provision license exam we are introduced to a test requiring Heroes to save people from a disaster area. Heroes are taught from young age that they might end up facing a disaster area and having to help the people involved in the disaster. Flash forward to chap 296 and we have a Hero watching a disaster area created not by a natural disaster but by Gigantomachia and he claims this is too much, that he can't take it and that he needs a new line of work. Now, yes, it can be that Hero was never trained in disaster areas as well as the U.A. High kids because maybe it comes from a poor Hero school... but still, I am not going to think this is a natural reaction for a Hero in the face of something too big when I saw teens being trained to face disasters right on their first week of school. We were introduced to the idea it is part of the job’s description for a Hero to be capable to face disasters and a earthquake or a Tsunami can do as much harm as Gigantomachia rampage.
I can totally get it is traumatizing FOR CIVILIANS but I hold Heroes to other standards and if this guy thought being a Hero is just capturing low class Villains, patrolling streets and posing on commercials or something like that, maybe he just wasn’t cut for the job.
Now, regarding the anime version...
Episode 9 - Yeah, Just Do Your Best, Īda! (いいぞガンバレ飯田くん! Ī zo Ganbare Īda-kun!)
Added parts notes:
The anime shows us many tiny additions as we see Shōto in various group shoots. However what I deem meaningful is the shoot in which Shōto is shown seated, facing away from the others, which hints at an aloof persona and, in a way, parallels Bakugō, who is also facing away, leaving Midoriya in the middle of the two, hinting at how they will become three core characters. The anime also shows clearly how Shōto keeps on sleeping as Bakugō rages and also shows him on the first line to hear out Thirteen, implying he is interested in doing so. Considering Shōto has a Quirk that poses two different dangers it makes sense he wants to hear what Thirteen has to say.
