The TodoFam in BNHA Vol. 5 Chap. 036 - Bakugō vs. Uraraka (爆豪VS麗日 Bakugō VS Uraraka)
Release date: March 23, 2015 (WSJ Issue 18, 2015)
Let’s look at what the manga show us first:
Observation notes:
In this chapter too there isn’t much to see as the only moment in which Shōto appears is the one in which he watched Bakugō blowing up Uraraka’s debrids into dust. And since we are at it, if one of those debrids had hit Bakugō’s head they would have killed him. They are represented as too big, too sharp and falling from a too high location to have a different effect. But no one cares so why am I worrying?
Sexism notes:
This chapter tries hard not to be sexist by showing an Uraraka that is doing an actually good job... but it is still worth to point out that... it is trying too hard, because ultimately it paints the public as dumb and sexist. In fact even though they are in a position taller than Uraraka and Bakugō they don’t notice the large amount of floating debrids and shouldn’t be affected by the smoke as they are, they demand for the match to be stopped because it is getting painful to watch such match, and this includes Present Mic too. Only Aizawa and Monoma seem to realize the truth.... among tons of Pro who only wanted to stop the match not because she was getting beaten up but... because she is a girl, because they won’t bat an eyelash when Midoriya will start breaking his bones to keep up with Shōto, even though everyone think Shōto, being Enji’s son, is stronger than most Pro and it is totally not painful to watch Midoriya breaking bone after bone trying to keep up with him. They even realize Midoriya can barely stand but... let’s let him continue, even Cementoss and Midnight will act solely when they think Midoriya and Shōto might end up killing each other and not before. Because that wasn’t painful to watch.
In short Horikoshi wanted to say that regardless of Uraraka being a girl she was a tough cookie... but by painting how everyone would worry for her getting beaten, how everyone would consider Bakugō bad for taking her seriously and saying they were wrong SOLELY because she got a plan, he makes an exception for Uraraka, who was undervalued because she is a girl, he doesn’t say boys and girls should be treated equally.
Now, regarding the anime version...
Episode 22 - Bakugo vs. Uraraka (爆豪VS麗日 Bakugō VS Uraraka)
Changed parts notes:
Instead than showing Shōto as he is surprised due to Bakugō’s giant size explosion the anime shows after the explosion, when the dust is settling. The result is that, instead than having a surprised/impressed Shōto, we just have one who stares at the scene with a plain face. Honestly i don’t find this an improvement.
