Hi! First off, just want to say that I'm loving this tournament and all the discussions that I've seen in the notes since the beginning. I can't believe we're so close to the end, but it's been so lovely to see everyone showing up to support their faves, and I can't wait for the girl of all time tourney! Thank you for hosting <3
I have some rather belated propaganda for one of the fallen, but sadly I've only just been introduced to her so unfortunately I couldn't really show my support any earlier. Kara from Detroit: Become Human, who I think lost a round to Eve rather early on. I only started playing the game a couple days ago and have mostly enjoyed it so far, but I LOVE Kara. She's brave and kind, breaks her programming to save a child from her abusive father, goes through some truly terrifying situations like having her memory wiped, and still approaches each circumstance with pragmatism and empathy. She's sweet and angsty and just so damn cool, so you you can imagine my surprise when I hopped onto AO3 and found that she wasn't even in the top 10 most written about characters in the fandom.
In Detroit, you alternate between playing three POV characters; Kara, Markus, and Connor. I would expect all three to have plenty of fanworks dedicated to them, but Markus and Connor beat Kara by literally thousands (as they are tagged on AO3). Sumo, an actual dog who belongs to a side character as his pet, features in over 1000 more works than Kara does! In a game such as this with multiple perspectives at play I wouldn't expect everybody to pick Kara as their fave, but when it gets to a point where the male characters are prioritised to such a degree that a non-speaking animal, as well as multiple side characters with minimal screentime, are deemed more worthy of attention than the primary woman's POV, there needs to be some serious reflection from the fandom as a whole. There is genuinely no reasoning that could justify that level of dismissiveness towards one of three protagonists - who just so happens to be the only woman - that is not just blatantly misogynistic. I've been scrolling the fandom tags and if I see even just one more person brushing off this issue by basically saying "It's not that I'm biased, it's just that Kara is objectively less interesting than the guys and that's why nobody talks about her" I'm gonna start biting people.
Anyway, though she has already fallen I will forever demand justice for Kara! You can definitely expect her as a submission for girl of all time <3
i'm so glad you're enjoying the tournament. kara from detroit: become human propaganda!
