“I can't believe your boldness,” they stand in the empty building that once held the time traveling craft, “ I should have thought of that. I was just so…” Geillis trails off. She had been shocked when Jamie had rang.
“Aye, we couldn't think past the fear either. If it wasn't for Isobel we would be gone and they would be here.”
Geillis can't hide the shiver that runs through her at that thought. She has been hiding knowing that her life is in danger. Neither William or Master Raymond would easily forgive her betrayal. She had determined that even if it cost her life, she would die without regret. Such evil couldn't be left untouched.
The relief at Jamie ‘s call was overwhelming. She was weak and almost physically sick with it. Seeing him, standing in the empty building brought her to her knees. He had hurried over to her, lifting her to her feet.
“You are safe. We all are.”
He then sat her down and explained all.
“I am sorry your mam is upset. Understandable.”
He nods with a soul weary sigh. “Aye. If it were Issac or Elizabeth, I would feel the same.”
She looks to where the craft would be. “If you hadn't done what you did, it would have been Elizabeth. William is still alive, we can assume. Elizabeth wouldn't have been.”
That is the brutal truth. He will miss the brother he thought he had but not the one he actually had. He even wonders why he had allowed their parents to return. Was it just to soften them up and allow them to trust him with Elizabeth? The thought twists his heart. His brother really had died. The real William. This other person, well, he was glad he was gone.
“Aye. I can't thank you enough for what you did. If you hadn't, I can't even imagine. They would have hurt you, wouldn't they?”
Again a shiver goes through her. “No. They would have killed me. Without a doubt.”
“I could do no less. To give my life to stop that type of evil was a sacrifice I would always make. I am sorry that we have all lost our jobs.”
“I believe that is the least of our worries.”
She laughs. “A fine point. I pray she forgives you.”
He pictures her, his beloved mam. The last time he saw her, she was sitting, staring at a picture of William, tears falling down her face. A swallow.
“Once she has some time to think about it, she will.”
