Raf/Ari: "Do you trust me?" - "How drunk are you right now?"
“Do you trust me?”
Within her ribs, her heart clenched. Her gaze stayed downturned, on the pointed toes of shoes that cost more than the downpayment of most people’s cars, avoiding the intensity of Raf’s dark eyes. The question wasn’t meant to hurt but it seeped under her skin and settled there like acid, slowly burning away at what lay beneath. “I don’t trust anyone.” A lie, bald and whispered; but she delivered it with the glance of hazel eyes. Not anymore.
“How drunk are you right now?”
She barely heard the query over the slam of the bass. Warmth lived in her fingertips and in the curve of her hips, Arielle’s arms snaked around Rafael’s neck, pulling him closer as she danced. In New York, she was the queen of letting go; in evenings like these she disappeared, fading into oblivion, only to resurface the next morning gasping for air and recollection of her sins. Her laugh was an elated sound, anchored by his proximity, “Probably drunk enough.” He frightened and intrigued her-- this evening, she wanted to remember.
