Disney Day 22 (Character Auditions)

I had a very full day today! First off, I got up this morning and decided to attend character auditions. The auditions were to extend your program though (in other words, I would be staying an additional program in order to be a character if accepted) and I’m not even close to being sure of my plans after this program. I figured it was better to give it a shot and possibly have more options at the end of it all than to regret not going.

The auditions were actually really fun! This coming from a girl who really enjoys improve and dance though... For the record, this audition was different from what I read it would be online. I know they changed the amount of auditions to reduce the number of people at each one, but I also think it was probably different because it was only for CPs. So the first thing we did was wait outside for half an hour (they told us check in began at 8am, but didn’t open the doors until around 8:30am), but once we got in things moved at a pretty comfortable pace. We grabbed a sticker from the table with a number on it, and sat around or stretched for a while since the auditions didn’t technically begin until 9am.

They didn’t really have the whole thing planned out. There were things they needed to do, but they didn’t have a set order for them to happen in, so it probably doesn’t always go the same. For us, we filled out a short form with our name, city, perner number (for current employees) and special talents. We then got measured, had our picture taken, and left the form with them (there were two ladies and one man). Once everyone had gone through this process, we all got on the floor with the man, Ken, and he explained that we would be doing an animation exercise. He encouraged us to be over the top, and to have fun. When it comes to over the top, I would say to take from Disney cartoons, like old school Goofy and Donald Duck... big and dramatic. For our exercise we were a zoo keeper either feeding or washing an animal, and then we were the animal. After this exercise, we learned a dance that was four eight counts I believe. We went over the dance a ton of times without music, then a few times with music. Ken was super sweet, fun, and helpful which made it a lot less stressful. He encouraged us to just have fun and keep smiling since a lot of characters don’t do the dancing portion, you won’t be ruled out just because you don’t get the dance or aren’t good at dancing.

Since we were all numbered, we then did both the animation and the dance for the judge in groups of four. So 1-4 went first and so on down the line. There were only 36 people at our audition so it didn’t take too long to get through all of the groups. It was really fun watching other people and wishing I would have thought of certain actions and movements. We were then instructed to each take a paper and go home. The paper basically instructed you to request to extend, and to check and see what your offer to extend says when it comes (in late October), if it says character as your role, then they liked you and you’re in. I know that I didn’t do the best I could have done at that audition, and am not expecting to get that offer, but it’s all good, because as fun as that would be... I can’t pay off student loans on that salary.

After the audition, I went home and grabbed some food then went to my class. We learned about different conflict management styles today, which is something I have learned about before, but it had a fun Disney twist of associating a character with each style. This was helpful for me, because now I can just remember how each character would deal with a conflict, and remember that style. Donald Duck represented Competing, the “My way or the highway” style, Genie represented accommodating, the “it would be my pleasure” style, Mulan represented collaborating, the “two heads are better than one” style, Rex represented avoiding, the “I’ll think about it tomorrow” style, and Hercules represented compromising, the “let’s make a deal” style. Learning about it this way made it a lot more fun, and we had a couple of interactive exercises which were also really fun, and also informational.

And, of course, my teacher had to read us a letter to bring us to tears, but this one was from a cast member. She had an old man come into her quick service restaurant with an anniversary badge on. I’ll spare you the tears, and long story short, the cast member offered him a cookie for he and his wife, but his wife had died a week before their planned anniversary trip, and she loved Disney. He said it felt like she was still there with him so the cast member brought him two cookies anyway and they both ended up sobbing.

Once I got out of class, I changed and headed to Epcot for the first time with a roommate and a couple of girls I had met at auditions that morning. It’s food and wine time right now so we “ate our way around the world.” I had ravioli and a chocolate cherry dessert that was beautiful and delicious. We went on Journey Into Imagination with Figment and The Seas with Nemo and Friends. Then I booked it for the busses so I could get to family home evening. I didn’t time it very well though and ended up not getting to the church pick-up until 7:30pm, and FHE started at 7pm. So I ended up walking from there, but it’s literally just a few blocks. Unfortunately there aren’t sidewalks the whole way so I ended up walking through some mud and wet foliage (it had just finished raining) and got some cute mud stains on my new sweats. I made it though! Watched them playing some game they had invented and ate some ice cream and chatted with some friends. It was worth the stains. Haha. I caught a ride home with one of the girls I went to Downtown Disney/Disney Springs with the other night, and crawled into bed to blog. Now I get to sleep since I have baby care training at 10am tomorrow! Have a magical evening! ;)

Hmmmmm...personally, I’ve never worked in entertainment and never had the desire to, so my knowledge is pretty limited. However, one of my good friends is working as a performer on his College Program, so I know this is certainly possible if you make it through the audition process. This is not the case if you’re an international program participant; unfortunately, I don’t believe there’s a way to be a CP/FC if you’re coming from outside the US.

From what I understand, there are two ways it can be done. First, you can go to one of the auditions that’s held prior to your arrival. They hold them throughout the country, so you may have to make a road trip out of it. One of my friends auditioned to be a character performer and was initially accepted as an attractions Cast Member, but his audition went well and he was contacted about being friends with Pluto and Eeyore, and he started his program as a character performer.

You can also go to auditions during your college program. During my last program, there were two auditions - one that occurred immediately at the beginning of the program (one girl I trained with made it through this audition and moved locations about 3 weeks after we arrived), and one that occurs...sometime in the middle of the program?...and this gives you the opportunity to extend into a performance role. For example, one of my friends worked attractions in Fantasyland and went to these auditions and became friends with Elsa during her program extension.

I’m by no means an expert on all the CP/FC rules, procedures, and such, so if you’re looking for a more definite answer, I’d see if you can get in contact with people who are in entertainment. However, hopefully my friends’ experiences could be of some help!
