More Info on Character Creation
Because I still haven’t moved on from fucking character creation, I have some more things to share. =D
My writer friend, which I have mentioned a few times already, Ninja, recently (They came in the mail today, but she’s been talking about them non-stop for a few days) came into possession of 3 useful sounding books. I did a little research on them (Bought them on my kindle), and I have to admit, they’re EXTREMELY useful.
The first one is The Positive Trait Thesuarus: A Writer’s Guide To Character Attributes by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi
Remember when I was talking about all those character traits and character flaws? This book will help! It’s part one of two. this book tells you the importance of character traits, why a lot of books fail to gain readers and a whole bunch of other shit.
So, what makes this book so special that you should go out and buy it like right fucking now? Let me tell you. this book gives you like 99 fucking positive traits to give your newly created character! I say like, cause I counted and sometimes my god damn counting skills fail me, so it’s anywhere between 96 and 101.
Reason two this book is so great, is it’s not just a list of traits. Each trait has it’s own kind of set up I’ll show you.
categories it falls under (Ex moral beliefs, interaction, identity, or achieves)
possible causes of the trait
associated thoughts of people with the trait
example of a character who has this trait
traits in supporting characters that might cause strife
challenging scenarios for the person with this trait
It gives you all kinds of information! That’s what I find so cool! You don’t have sit in front of whatever the hell you write on and think, what is a good trait to give this character? What kind of mindset would they have? What in this character’s past would cause them to have this trait?
The negative trait book is exactly same set up only with the negative traits that characters could have! So all those major flaws a character should have, THEY ARE IN THIS BOOK! The Negative Trait Thesuarus: A Writer’s Guide To Character Attributes by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi
It’s all right there in this/these book(s)! So, as a resource for you to create characters, I suggest these books below. They’re freaking great. I love them, they’re helpful, and informative, and they’ll help you avoid a flat character/ a mary sue. I’m not saying they will make where you CAN’T create a mary sue, I’m saying they’ll help, cause at the end of the day, you’re still the one who gives the characters the traits, so good luck with your writing, and look into getting these book! I put the approximate prices with them! (prices are from Amazon, if you have amazon Prime, the prices are about 1-2 American dollars lower.)
