Can I just say how refreshing it is to see you lay out Sylvain for what he is, like holy shit the amount of excuses people make for him is insane. He is an unrepentant raging misogynist, serial cheater and all around shitty person with ZERO character development. And it drives me nuts how many people pussy foot around his actions. Thank you for not mincing words.
See, that's the thing, he has character development, it's just not positive at all. And for me, that's honestly what sucks the worst.
Like, okay he acknowledges that he's a prick. And then what? Because of how 3H is written and structured, everything pretty much gets sidetracked for the war, but even then, Sylvain's still on his bullshit.
And I get it, I can see the things in him that people like: his hidden intelligence, his conceptualization of life and death, his bitterness towards status, etc.
But the fulcrum of his character is fixed around treating women like garbage because he fundamentally sees them as inauthentic gold-diggers who only want him for his crest and status, not for him.
And like... dude, shut the fuck up! That's literally something you made up in your head!
And because most of the women he interacts with in that particular way are NPCs, we're supposed to take him as is. The only times where it's flipped back on him is with Mercedes (she ends up coddling him anyway, the Crest babies line and her giggling about it makes me want to retch) and Dorothea (she could've been written to tell him off just like she did Lorenz but no they made it about her trying to get him back by talking about her looks and age in comparison to his Crest, when Sylvain apparently hit on Ingrid's grandmother).
This is the guy the creators wrote to cover up their blatant misogynistic writing with how Crest bearers are treated???
I was gonna save my Sylvain rant for when I get to Blue Lions-and no doubt I'll still have more to say-but truly, after going back and forth on how I feel about him because I didn't want my moots and followers to be sad about me disliking him, I kinda just need to bite the bullet and say that I think he sucks, and no hidden depths redeem him in my eyes.
Ava is cruel and I will never like her. Sorry to those who do, but if you do then this post and probably my blog isn't for you.
She is cruel to Simon, he is a criminal yes, but he showed empathy and apologised. And if you believe him, he surrendered and tried to stop any larger damage after Eden's skirmish onto Filament Station
And she continues to dehumanize him, belittle him, treat him like a lesser being
It just goes to show that even in the apocalypse human's will not band together. She treats him lesser
Even say "Some people aren't worth saving" she said that to Simon.
She promised to bring him up and let him out twice and neither time she did
And I don't want anyone coming up to me and saying "You're only saying that because she's a woman". I would feel the exact same about Ava if she was an Adam. I don't give a shit, it's a bad person; woman, man or otherwise
I can respect the mission, I can respect the pure stress she is under
But I cannot condone nor respect the literally hell she (partly) knowingl put Simon through
I also don't care that she died, because he died too so that's an equal loss making it null and void
She was so fucking worried about the sub being damaged but then she dropped him back into the ocean knowing full well he would be injured, she was angry at him and she hurt him on purpose
"But what about the camera" he didn't know, because she didn't tell him. She didn't deserve it, but she didn't tell him. Just because you didn't expect something to happen doesn't mean it won't and how was Simon supposed to know that a regular camera couldn't see through blood. That doens't feel like common knowledge imo
All this to say Ava is a well written character so much so that I can't do anything but hate her
I think Glinda and Fiyero should team up to beat the shit out of Frexspar
It’s my personal opinion, from observation, that the most hated character within a franchise is usually one that holds an uncomfortable mirror up to the majority of the fanbase attracted to that particular piece of media. The most hated character is literally never the Evil Sexist Puppy-Kicking Genocidal Villain because most of us know that’s not a good thing to do conceptually.
However if a character does something minor you hate about yourself, or have done and been punished or ostracized for, you can project the hatred usually directed towards the self onto them and it’s cathartic. You’re no longer the one receiving consequences and you can pretend you’re giving them to others, and it makes you feel powerful. And fiction is actually a healthy way to process these kinds of feelings but you can’t process them without acknowledging they need to be processed or you’re just stuck doing the same thing over and over again. And that’s where the 7 billion tweets about shooting Character into the sun with a catapult come in.
The advice I can give if you or anyone is getting hurt by discourse or the waves of hate of any ship or character you like is BLOCK AND MUTE everyone or everything that is making you upset even if it's a little, and DON'T ENGAGE WITH ANY OF THEM either. I'm serious! Protect yourself and mental health!
No matter if what they wrote made you angry, sad, or disrespected, don't give them anything because 98% of these people will not listen to you or anyone and just want to hate on something.
After what happened in one fandom I was in that made me physically ill looking at anything about that media after a while, even the ship that I love. I started wanting to vomit; I'm serious because a bunch of shippers from a popular one saw that my ship was an easy target and started to send so many hateful comments in fanart and posts that I couldn't take it anymore.
I don't know who needs to hear this but it is not normal to hate Colin Bridgerton this much!
We are on season 4, and the amount of "I hate Colin, just watching him pisses me off" already is mind-boggling that a fictional character creates that much irritation when he is not even the lead any longer. It's Benedict! And people spend way more time talking about him/comparing Ben to Colin, which tells me everything I need to know, and betrays everything of your claims to carelessness for him while you're spending time talking about him this much!
The admission doesn't always happen but especially when people tell the truth and say that he "just gives me the ick" personifies the exact root of the issue taken with him. That is a you problem! And it says 2 things: a) you are extremely immature, because the concept of "the ick" is not only a juvenile coping mechanism in adulthood, but it is also a poor explanation, even in dating culture, and you should read up on articles on why people describing this falls more negatively on them than the person they are criticizing, and b) "the ick" that people are getting from Colin is almost 99% guaranteed an undealt with juvenile trauma from rejection, relationship hurt, or bullying that they are too stupid and way too un-selfaware to be able to identify to even begin to seek out help and healing.
I've been too done with this fandom.
