magnolia and/or Jurassic!
The Danger Is Typically The Vampires--so we're gonna go with Magnolia!
Magnolia: Talk about one of your favorite side-characters.
So I've been re-drafting/re-arranging safe in the dark the last few days in an attempt to make things uhhh...coherent.
So let me tell you about Katie goddamn Fenwick.
Katie started out as a faceless body among three dozen. Another dead girl at the Vida Nocturne night club fire massacre. She is nothing but a scent, a taste, blood on the tongue and in the air. Lilacs and springtime, violet sugar undercut with iron and salt. She is nothing and no one.
Until she isn't.
Because Katie Fenwick gets to live.
Watches three dozen people get murdered around her.
Watches a man carve through them like nothing, watches him order them to carve through each other and themselves and sees that horrifyingly they listen.
Listens to him try to goad the one other person alive in that club into killing her. Sees the way Alex looks at them, not like a person, not like a human being, but like the end of not just her life--theirs as well.
Katie Fenwick knows she's going to die.
And then she doesn't.
She squeezes herself under the bar and knocks down a dozen bottles of liquor and glassware shatters as the shelves get pushed off their slats.
And she tries not to breathe.
And she tries not to look at the pile of bodies in the corner that used to be people she liked, people she went to school with, people she knew.
She doesn't die. Sometimes she wishes she had died. Sometimes it feels like that would be better than the nightmares, and the therapist she cannot tell the truth to, and the family and friends who do not understand why she is switching schools, moving miles away, cutting herself out of the world just to hide from the night that she lived through.
She lives.
She heals as best she can.
She gets the fuck out of new england once she finishes college.
And I don't think she ever looks back.
