SCENE — “MEETING MYSELF”
Location: The Star Sapphire Convergence, a crystalline chamber connected to the emotional spectrum Time: Adult Carol, age 27
The chamber glowed with soft, warm violet light. The Star Sapphire crystal hummed in steady pulses, responding to Carol’s heartbeat. She’d only planned to tune the resonance frequency — a simple maintenance task.
But the room around her shimmered. Bent. Folded.
And suddenly—
Standing across from her was… her.
Sixteen-year-old Carol Ferris: glittery headband, sparkly nails, heart-shaped purse, and that unmistakable “the world is my musical” posture.
Young Carol gasped.
YOUNG CAROL: “Oh my gosh. Are you me? You look like a CEO. And an action figure. And — oh sweet stars — are we successful?!”
Adult Carol blinked, stunned but calm. Of course the emotional spectrum would do this. Of course love would demand she face the girl she’d once been.
ADULT CAROL: “Yes. I’m you. Just… a little older.”
Young Carol squealed, hopping up and down.
YOUNG CAROL: “I knew destiny had great plans for us! Do we marry Hal Jordan? Do we become star-crossed cosmic lovers? Do we—”
ADULT CAROL (gently): “Carol.”
The word cut through the excitement.
Young Carol froze, eyes wide. Adult Carol stepped closer, hands clasped, voice soft but strong.
ADULT CAROL: “I’m not here to talk about Hal.”
Young Carol pouted. Adult Carol smiled lovingly — amused, a little embarrassed, entirely compassionate.
ADULT CAROL: “I’m here to talk about you.”
Young Carol blinked.
YOUNG CAROL: “…Me?”
ADULT CAROL: “All those years, you wanted love so badly that you kept performing. Pretending. Trying so hard to feel worthy.”
She touched young Carol’s shoulder — a warm, steadying gesture.
ADULT CAROL: “You weren’t unworthy. You were overwhelmed. You were lonely. And you didn’t know how else to be seen.”
Young Carol’s eyes shimmered.
YOUNG CAROL: “I… I didn’t know that. I always thought I had to be sparkly and dramatic or nobody would care.”
Carol’s past self looked down, almost ashamed.
And that’s when another voice entered the chamber.
JESSICA CRUZ: “That’s not true. I cared.”
Carol turned. There stood young Jessica Cruz — hoodie, backpack, tired eyes, soft smile. The emotional spectrum must’ve drawn her from memory too, because she looked exactly as she did in high school.
Young Carol lit up like a firework.
YOUNG CAROL: “JESSIE!”
Jess let out a shy laugh as Carol lunged into a hug.
Adult Carol placed a hand over her heart — a reaction she didn’t expect, warm and immediate.
ADULT CAROL: “I never thanked you.”
Jessica blinked in surprise.
JESSICA: “For what? You dragged me into so many embarrassing situations.”
Adult Carol stepped closer, eyes warm.
ADULT CAROL: “For staying. For always being honest with me. For being my friend even when… I wasn’t easy to deal with.”
Young Carol gasped.
YOUNG CAROL (offended): “What?! I was DELIGHTFUL.”
Jessica and Adult Carol spoke in unison.
JESSICA: “You were intense.”
ADULT CAROL: “Very intense.”
Young Carol crossed her arms. But adult Carol smiled at her with so much understanding — not judgment — that the girl’s pout slowly faded.
ADULT CAROL: “Jess, you grounded me. You told me the truth when others just let me spin out. Even when I didn’t listen, I needed your voice.”
Jessica’s expression softened, stunned by the sincerity.
JESSICA: “I… really didn’t think I made that much of a difference.”
ADULT CAROL: “You made all the difference.”
She knelt down slightly, meeting young Jessica’s eyes at her height.
ADULT CAROL: “You were the first person who saw me. Not the glitter, not the drama — me. You were my one true friend.”
Jessica swallowed hard, her eyes glistening.
JESSICA: “Carol…”
Young Carol stepped toward her older self, voice trembling.
YOUNG CAROL: “So… you don’t hate who I was?”
Adult Carol reached out and took her hand.
ADULT CAROL: “Hate you? I love you.”
Young Carol’s breath caught.
ADULT CAROL: “You were loud, and messy, and overly romantic, yes… but you were brave. You loved fearlessly. You dreamed fearlessly. You felt everything.”
She squeezed her hand.
ADULT CAROL: “You weren’t perfect, but you were trying. And every version of me after you is grateful.”
Young Carol threw her arms around her older self, hugging tightly — a pure, unfiltered gesture.
Jessica smiled softly, watching her two versions reunite.
The chamber light brightened — the emotional spectrum acknowledging acceptance, integration, self-love.
The two Carols slowly separated.
YOUNG CAROL: “Promise me something.”
ADULT CAROL: “Anything.”
YOUNG CAROL: “Don’t stop loving big. Even if it gets scary.”
Adult Carol laughed, wiping a tear.
ADULT CAROL: “I won’t. I just learned to love better.”
The room shimmered again — time gently correcting itself. Jessica faded first, waving shyly.
JESSICA: “I’m always here. Even if I’m just a memory.”
Young Carol faded next, whispering:
YOUNG CAROL: “Make me proud.”
Adult Carol stood alone in the violet glow, breathing in the stillness.
ADULT CAROL (softly, to herself): “You already did.”
And for the first time in her life, Carol Ferris felt fully — beautifully — whole.
