Portia inherited a vast library from her father. As a child, she was always allowed to read whatever she wanted from any of the shelves, except for the texts on anatomy her father always kept out of her reach. Now that she owns the library for herself, she finds that the anatomical drawings fascinate her, but not as much as the texts on law and logic. Her favorite book of all is the well-worn copy of Don Quixote, which first inspired her to try to disguise herself as a man when she read about Dorothea’s attempt to do so. Portia constantly expands on the library, always hoping to learn more about a world she feels cut off from thanks to her gender.
