Short little update on Charisma Check (DnD is just an excuse for flirting without consequences)!

Sorry I've been posting less and taking so long with the next Charisma Check update! Life happened and tbh I kinda lost a bit of momentum with this fic 😭... But I made this mood board for Chapter 7 today to motivate myself to get back into it! I'm over 6k words in and not completely sure how long it will be so it might still take a while but I'm definitely not abandoning this story, don't worry! Thank you to all of you who left kudos and comments on the fic in the meantime, you guys are the best! <3

Maybe I'll post more sneak peeks of what I have so far soon :)

Charisma Check Chapter 6 Sneak Peek!

Max sent Mike a blank stare. “Are you actually trying to get fired on your first day? There’s a reason it says ‘Staff Only’.”

“Come on,” Mike complained and gestured at the rainy street. “Keith’s not here and nobody’s coming anyway.” His fingers closed around the door handle. “Like you don’t let Lucas sneak in when you're alone on shift so you can make out in the broom closet.”

Max’s brows shot up. “Oh, so that was your plan?”

Mike froze. 

Will’s stomach did a weird little flip.

“I–” Mike started, but Max cut him off.

“It’s letting up again.” Her eyes narrowed. “I’m giving it ten minutes tops before it gets busy.”

For one second, Mike just stood there, his fingers tightening around the handle, the back of his neck faintly pink. Or maybe Will had imagined the hesitation, because the next moment Mike pulled the door wide open and looked back at him with a quick smile.

“Guess that means we’ve got ten minutes.”

They used to come up with elaborate stories of what lay behind Staff Only doors when they were younger. At the arcade, at school, at diners… Any time they saw one, they’d start whispering about the secret lives of their teachers, the true origins of their chicken dinners, or hidden portals to elven cities and dwarven forge halls.

Reality was far less exciting, Will still couldn’t help glancing curiously around the back of the shop. His gaze swept over all the things normally hidden from customers’ view… stacked cups and gadgets on a shelf above the chest freezer, including a waffle maker, cleaning supplies in the corners. Mike’s jacket and Max’s lunchbox sat on a stool near another door close to the entrance.

He felt Mike watching him.

Charisma Check C6 Sneak Peek!!

Will’s heart was still beating out of his chest when he parked his bike near the new Scoops Ahoy. The air had warmed again, still heavy with humidity from the constant drizzle. Mike’s shirt that he hadn’t quite known whether to change out of clung slightly to his chest under his jacket. Right in the middle, where Mike had pressed his knuckles two hours earlier.

Two hours. And still, his whole body buzzed like he’d touched a live wire. If anything, it only seemed to be getting worse with every step toward the little shop a couple streets down from the town center.

His skin felt hot beneath the thin veil of raindrops hitting his face, like they were desperately trying to give him something to ground himself.

But the moment just kept replaying in his head, over and over again… 

For anyone just stumbling across this, this is the prompt of the fic:

In one of their summer 1989 campaigns, Mike includes a mysterious, recurring NPC. A male tower guard who appears to be interested in Will. Will is a little apprehensive and confused at first, but Lucas, Dustin, and Max are very much intrigued.

The guard seems to be hiding something crucial for moving the campaign forward, but it turns out Will is the only one who can get him to talk... by charming him.  

(Inspired by that one post “Was playing DnD and started flirting with the tavern keeper to get some info and at a certain point I realized I was just dirty talking with my buddy Ben.”)

Charisma Check Chapter 7 Sneak Peek!

Will searched through his backpack for the third time that morning before letting it drop back onto the floor. Then he resumed pacing his room, checking underneath random stacks of paper and carelessly discarded clothes.

He’d only started using that sketchbook a week ago, so there weren’t many drawings in it yet. But it had been one of the rare gifts Hop had picked out for him that actually made sense. A dark green sketchbook with thick, high-quality pages that Hop had gotten from out of town for his graduation. It couldn’t have been cheap. He’d hate to have lost it.

He usually made sure to remember exactly where every one of his sketchbooks was. 

Especially the one he kept locked away in the bedside table.

Had he…

He fished the key out from behind an old picture frame and unlocked the drawer, just in case.

The green sketchbook wasn’t there. The only one in that drawer was blue, its edges worn. Unlike all his other sketchbooks, which had some sort of label or name so he could tell them apart, this one was the only one that didn’t.

Though it was older than most of the others, its color was still almost pristine. It rarely saw daylight, usually leaving its hiding place only after the sun had set and Will was certain no one would suddenly burst into his room. 

Sometimes he reached for it when a particularly cold day made him shiver, or when a door banged close too loudly in their house. 

Most often, though, he took it out in the middle of the night, when he woke up in a cold sweat from a nightmare.

It had been eighteen months since Will had last added a drawing to that sketchbook.

Little Charisma Check sneak peek for Chapter 5 ;)

Will let out a shaky breath and quickly swung his legs over the side of the bed, practically scrambling to grab his clothes so he could head to the bathroom and change.

“Will…” Mike whined from the bed, as Will rummaged his backpack for clean socks and underwear. “It’s like… seven, what are you doing?”

Will glanced over at the clock, a small scoff escaping him when he saw the time. “It’s almost ten, Mike. We’ve already missed breakfast.”

“We can just grab whatever…” More grumbling and shuffling.

Will picked his old shirt and pants from the floor.

“Will.” 

Will stopped by the door. “What?”

“You can just take one of mine.”

Will blinked at him, until Mike loosely gestured at the clothes in Will’s arms. “One of my shirts.”

“I can wear the same one two days in a row, it’s fine.”

Mike’s brows drew together, and Will must have somehow said something seriously upsetting, because Mike was now actually getting up and crossing over to his closet. About… yeah, not even three minutes after waking up. 

When there wasn’t even school.
