Meet Stephen Garten from Charity Charge

What is your product?

It’s a credit card rewards website. We’re partnering with banks, but instead of the cardholder earning points toward stuff, they contribute toward the charities of their choice. They can see where the money’s going and how much they’re earning. Partnering with Networks for Good, on day 1, cardholders will be able to choose any charity in their state ... We want people to be able to give back as easily as they can.

What’s your motivation to develop Charity Charge?

The inspiration for the idea came from my own problem … I was accumulating points through my credit cards, but when I went to check the balance, I realized there was nothing I wanted on the rewards site. I checked my email and had an email from a charity that asked if I could donate. I thought it would be interesting – that through my every day purchases, I could support the charities I care about.

What is your mission?

I want everyone to feel like they’re a hero when they pull out their credit card and build a financial instrument that they’re proud to use.

How are you using technology to work with your team?

The majority of my team is here in Austin, though we have advisors on the East Coast in Baltimore and Atlanta and on the West Coast too. We use a lot of collaboration tools to communicate with the team outside of Austin … I still like picking up the phone.  Face to face is great, but with apps we’re able to collaborate at the same time on documents.
