False Daughters Musings: Family

Olivia is, by Dickens tradition, an orphan from birth and has spent plenty of time in foster cares up until the point of the surgeries. As such, after the surgeries she has no family to return to, but instead she builds her own community of family around the various homeless, poverty-stricken, and lost people on the streets of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Particular favorites of hers are "Tiggy" or "Ol' Tigs" (real name Jonathan Twig), Wilbur Junior, "Lipstick Tom", and Marla the "Soup Fairy". Because of the nature of her life, Olivia isn't quite sure of her ethnicity or her background whatsoever, but that does not seem to bother her, and she welcomes new people into her circle of family quite easily.

RK comes from a decent sized family - two parents, two younger siblings. The family itself follows strict religious principles, and when RK eventually picked up a guitar for rock reasons instead of good, religious reasons, tension brewed in the family. When RK was kidnapped off the street for the surgeries, upon her return, she was accused of terrible things including but not limited to sex, drugs, and of course rock n' roll. When she came out as a lesbian (though "came out" is an improper term since she was more "found out") her family, particularly her mother, determined to sever ties with her and more or less kicked her out of the family. RK hasn't looked back since.

Charleese is an incredibly family-oriented person. Growing up the eldest and being the "second mom" to her family, especially after her mother fell ill, she took on lots of responsibilities raising the many younger siblings she has. A regular ol' daddy's girl, too, being surrounded by family always makes her comfortable and relieved, even if they're being loud and obnoxious. Ever since the surgery she has refused to return to her family, deeming it would be too painful for both parties to see each other. On top of that, she doesn't deem herself worthy of raising a family herself, dooming herself to a life much less family-oriented than she originally hoped for herself.

Kasumi's family can date themselves all the way to the Sengoku Era of Japan, and she is a first generation American after her parents immigrated together to the west coast. In her younger years, contact with her grandparents in Japan was often, but they soon fell like dominoes to various illnesses, one even dying after tumbling down a staircase in a subway. After the surgery, Kasumi returned to her family to hear the news of her last grandparent's death. The rest is particularly tragic: Soon after the 7th birthday of her little brother the boy and her mother both perished in a wretched car accident that she, somehow, survived. Her father then fell into deep depression, missing work and getting himself fired--which led to his eventual suicide.

False Daughter Musings: Nicknames

Olivia has the most variation in nicknames and she's comfortable with people calling her any variation of her name, from Ollie to Liv. She'll happily answer to any nickname without a second thought and there are no barriers as to who can call her what.

RK's actual name is Rose Kingsley but no one is allowed to call her anything but RK. No one.

Charleese isn't content with a lot of nicknames, but family and close friends (such as the other Daughters) sometimes call her Char (pronounced Shar). Most of the time she's referred to by her full name.

Kasumi is occasionally called Kas by the other Daughters, most notably RK. She doesn't have an opinion on nicknames and neither encourages nor discourages them.

False Daughters Musings: Charleese

Charleese's Surgery: Charleese's was the most grueling of the surgeries, with the longest recovery. In the end, even though she survived and the surgery more or less worked, it was considered a failure. Her lungs were surgically removed, leaving her with lots of messy, brutal scars that she will never get over.

Charleese's Replacement: Amphibious lungs, connected with gill-like contraptions on her back that allow her to breathe without her nose or mouth in or out of water.

Charleese is an easily jaded person, but despite her numerous insecurities she finds ways, no matter how drastic, to bring her mind at ease with herself. One such way was scarification in the pattern of decorated crocodile skin across her body to come to terms with the terrible scars that wreck much of her torso and breasts.

Despite the scars she has become a prolific and successful sex worker in the New Orleans area - a career by choice - and she often brings prostitutes out of abusive relationships from their pimps. However, this is most often done by force. As such, she has gained a few enemies on the streets, but most of these enemies were gathered via fear.

Any sexual assault and unwanted sexual advances mean death in her book, and she has no problem taking the law into her own hands. If someone gets away from her, she'll enlist the help of Kasumi to hunt them down.
