Taxi Dress, ca. 1932
Designer: Charles James
The Met: "James considered this dress one of his most important designs, both commercially and artistically. Though difficult to manufacture—one side of the top and the spiral wrap-over skirt being made without seams—it was the first dress to be sold in a department store’s accessories department, along with sweaters, in sealed cellophane packages. It was made in two sizes and sold at Best & Co. in 1933–34 for twenty-two dollars [$553 in 2026]. James conceived the spiral design in 1929, and this sample piece in a novel ribbed wool appears to date from before his commercial version for Best’s, exemplifying how the designer continuously refined his ideas."
British artist Marit Guiness Aschan bought this dress in 1937 as a long time supporter of the designs of Charles James. This gown, ‘Sylphide’, consists of layers of yellow chiffon cinched with a quilted corset style belt, V&A.

'charles james velvet cap, 1948' in the couture accessory - caroline rennolds milbank (2002)
No matter which angle you choose to view Charles James’s 1955 pagoda suit, you can appreciate the smooth planes of its surface. It appears seamless but seams there are in more unexpected places. The pattern matching of the red and gold brocade is quite magical. The Museum at FIT.
Socialite, heiress, and fashion icon Millicent Rogers was born on this day [Feb 1] in 1902. She designed this 1948 pink faille and peach taffeta evening gown, with a cutaway overskirt, in collaboration with couturier Charles James. Donated to Met Museum collection.
