Charles LeMaire and Mary Wills designed this distinctive red gown for Bette Davis in her second turn as Queen Elizabeth I in the 1955 film 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑽𝒊𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒏 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏. The dress is so identifiable that it is nearly impossible to miss in the 1963 𝑻𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒓, 𝑺𝒉𝒆’𝒔 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒆 when Janine Grandel donned it as Madame Bonnet during a costume party, at which many other reused costumes from Fox’s wardrobe were utilized. The costume was likely purchased by Debbie Reynolds at the Twentieth Century Fox (now Twentieth Century Studios) auction of 1971. Later, Debbie would go on to auction off her collection in a series of three Hollywood memorabilia auctions between 2011 and 2014.
