“When I die, it’s going to read, ‘Game Show Fixture Passes Away.’ Nothing about the theater, or Tony Awards, or Emmys. But it doesn’t bother me.” – Charles Nelson Reilly (January 13, 1931 – May 25, 2007). Charles Nelson Reilly, who was born eighty-six years ago today, was a Tony Award-winning, Emmy-nominated American actor, comedian, director, and drama teacher; despite his storied career on stage and screen, Reilly is best known for his guest appearances on television shows, most notably The Match Game. When Reilly was a child, his father, a poster artist and illustrator, was approached by another illustrator with the chance to make an animated film as partners if the family would move to California. Reilly’s mother rejected the idea and the other illustrator moved on; that other illustrator was Walt Disney. At eighteen, Reilly began classes at the New School under actress Uta Hagen; his classmates included Steve McQueen, Geraldine Page, and Gene Hackman. Around this time, Reilly got a meeting with an NBC executive, who told him, “They don’t let queers on television.” Despite that, Reilly landed on Broadway, winning his first Tony for originating the role of Bud Frump in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” In 1964, he originated the role of Cornelius Hackl in “Hello, Dolly!” From there, Reilly became a television mainstay, appearing on shows like “Lidsville,” “The Tonight Show,” “The X-Files,” “The Match Game,” “The Larry Sanders Show,” and “SpongeBob SquarePants.” Reilly also was a longtime drama teacher at HB Studios, where his pupils included Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler. In “The Life of Reilly,” the highly-acclaimed film version of his one-man show, Reilly described how he never taught alone, but instead brought to each class all of those who had taught him; among others, he said, “I [bring] all of my pupils, especially the forty pupils that I lost to AIDS. I can hear them sing every day, and we all sit down together and we teach a class.” Charles Nelson Reilly died of pneumonia on May 25, 2007; he was seventy-six. A tribute by Fannie Flagg written shortly after their deaths. (They died less than 4 months apart) “Besides being hilarious, Brett and Charles were two of the smartest people I have ever known. On “Match Game,” they got such a big kick out of each other! They razzed one another and everybody else on the panel mercilessly, and they were particularly relentless on the people they really liked. It was never mean or hurtful, and they loved it when you razzed them back. One of the happiest times in my life was in 1980 when I was doing “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” on Broadway, and Charles, Brett and I were staying at the Wyndham Hotel at the same time. Every day at around 4 o’clock in the afternoon they would come to my room for cocktails. Many is the time I would come home from after the show and they would still be sitting there having a good time.
