Helga looked up from her book at the Major, then to the side, following the Private who had left with her eyes. He was young, naive, not the cutest, but eager to please. Thus he was perfect for a bit of lighthearted fun.
“Look, we’re not on shift, and he started it. He offered. Am I not allowed to have a little fun?”
“Have you considered this isn’t fun to him?”
She set the book down. “Major? Frankly, I don’t care. I’m along for the ride. And if it gets bad? I’m an adult. I can take care of it myself. Your concern is noted, but unfounded.”
Charles frowned and crossed his arms. “I’m hardly concerned for you. He’s the one my worry lies with. Young men can be...”
“Well, he’ll have to learn sometime, now won’t he?” Helga picked her book back up. “He’s in the middle of a war. I don’t think this will be the worst thing he’ll encounter. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d really like to get this chapter done before my shift starts.”
He shook his head. “You won’t last here with that mentality.”
Helga shrugged. Lasting at the 4077 was not something she intended to do, anyway. If her request went through, Helga would be back in the field in no time.
