okay, picture this. the stoic character is going through incredible amounts of pain. they have to keep their stoic countenance, because they don’t want to be perceived as weak, but they’m practically hyperventilating and suddenly they take in one more deep, gasping breath and scream.

the whumpee, who’s usually optimistic and happy, with a slacker reputation, has been getting sick. it’s not a big deal, it just feels like the common cold, and since they don’t want anyone babying them, they shove it down and hide it.

by the time it gets bad enough that they know it’s not the simple common cold, they’ve hidden it for long enough that when they are no longer able to hide it, everyone thinks they’re faking for attention and a reprive on work.

queue the whumpee being in too much pain to really do anything. they’re on their last legs, limping their way through tasks they could normally complete with ease, and no one will cut them any slack. even their nicest friends get told off for being ‘too gullible’ because everyone thinks they’re just trying to slack off.

finally, they just straight up collapse and there’s a huge oh shit moment

consider. something happens to the member of the group who everyyhold on a kind of pedistal. maybe they’re annoying but lovable, maybe they’re the cool and collected leader, maybe they’re the relentlessly cheerful one, but it doesn’t matter. after whatever whumpy event occurred, that ever-so-reliable person is made vulnerable, and it’s scary.

that upestting feeling when you’re like forty chapters into a fic and loving it and suddenly it changes from exactly the type of whump you’re looking for to something that totally squicks you out.

like, what’s with this utterly strange shift into a post-apocalyptic setting that was never mentioned before then in the fic that doesn’t appear at all in the source content??
