A Scarred Heart Still Loves

The clang of a knife hitting the ground beneath him almost sounded BELIEVABLE. It resonated cleanly within his brain, with the noise echoing off the very insides of his cranium. His caught the sight of blood on his fingertips and a breath stopped short in his throat. His heart fought against the constraints of his ribcage in a crazed PANIC. There was no need for rational thought because he was unable to CONJURE one. FEAR had seized him and a body lay at his feet soaked in crimson gushing from its wounds. It was DEAD. He had KILLED it. The pace of his breathing was rapid to leave him panting and it seemed as if his lungs were refusing to take in oxygen that was so crucial to his survival. He tried pulled to back away, only to find that his feet were frozen in place. No matter how hard he willed himself to move, nothing would budge. A sudden laugh sounded from him...but he did not recognize it as his own. It was TWISTED noise that sounded MANIACAL, but yet...its origin was his own. He was enjoying this?! It was if someone else had crawled into his body and taken over; like he was POSSESSED.
A sharp gasp was jerked from him as he suddenly sat up in a startled jolt. His widened dark sapphire eyes flew open and they were clouded by a thick haze of CONSTERNATION. It had nearly been a year since his last nightmare, so why now had one chose to slip through his defenses? Glancing down at his trembling hands, the intake of his labored breathing steadily brought him back to a sense of reality. His skin was soaked with sweat and it glistened even in the faint sliver of moonlight that peaked through the curtains of the small log they had rented. Swinging his legs out from underneath the covers, Will Graham now sat at the edge of the bed. He glanced over at his sleeping wife and a small sense of relief washed over him. At least, he had not woken her. He released a lengthy breath before burying his head in hands and closing his eyes as he attempted to steady himself once again.
My name is Will Graham. It’s 2:27 AM and I’m...in just outside Edinburgh, Scotland.
