Top Turf Sophomores Line Up for Inaugural Penn Mile
SORRY EVERYONE FOR MY UNCOOL TEXT POSTS!
At the bequest of one, and out of curiosity for myself, I'm delighted to take an interest in what's going on with this new turf race called the Penn Mile. And for a half million purse, a lot of horsemen are taking notice too. I've never handicapped Penn National, and there's hardly anything out there in regards to existence of any bias.
$500,000 Penn Mile - 3-Year-Olds. 1 mile on turf at Penn National. Post Time: Saturday June 1 at 7:26pm EST.
[Post Position, Horse - Jockey, Impost, Trainer - Summary, Opinion in italics]
1) Noble Tune - Javier Castellano, 122 lbs, Chad Brown - 2-for-2 this year and 4 wins in 5 total starts-- the loss being a respectable 2nd in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-- the Unbridled's Song colt is lightly raced coming in but all the more a favorite. He made a mad dash to win a 1-mile allowance race at Tampa Bay in March, prevailing by a nose over Are You Kidding Me, then made a middle-pack move to win the American Turf (II) at Churchill Downs going just a nudge further. Chad Brown is one of the better turf trainers in the country and Noble Tune is one of the better turf juveniles. The rail shouldn't be an issue-- he has won on the rail anyway.
2) Pitch N Roll - Huber Villa-Gomez, 116 lbs, Ron Potts - The dark bay gelding by Scipion won his only start of the year in a Presque Isle poly allowance race, romping home by 5 1/2, off the board just once in 8 starts and a stakes winner on all-weather. This will be his turf debut. Raced mainly on shorter distances, he will stretch out and should take to the grass well considering his poly success and Dynaformer as his damsire. Look for him to give this race some pace, as he likes to set the speed limit.
3) Yougotthatgoinforu - Emilio Flores, 116 lbs, J. Michael Rogers - One of the first Student Councils to race, the dark bay gelding clipped heels last out in a Pimlico stake won by Redwood Kitten. Trouble-riddled in the past, he has won 2 at Penn National, but both were on dirt with no prior turf races, and in both he set a sleeper pace. He has a very classy pedigree that speaks turf, but has yet to really flash much.
4) Are You Kidding Me - Luis Saez, 116 lbs, Roger Attfield - The Run Away and Hide colt has no wins this year in 3 starts, but showed plenty of class in those efforts. He was nosed out in an allowance race by Noble Tune and then got shuffled back in a Keeneland turf allowance. Luis Saez was a hot rider at Belmont yesterday, and this colt gets a 6-pound advantage over Noble Tune who just barely bested him. If he can outkick him and get away early, who knows...
5) Triple Cross - Mario Pino, 116 lbs, Adam Rice - The Werblin gelding is victoryless this year in 4 starts, but ran a big one two starts back in a turf sprint at Keeneland, running 2nd while gunning it late. While he was fleeced in most of his starts, they were largely poly and dirt races. He showed big progression moving to that one race on turf. Well worth using in your exotics on mystique alone, a pinch of dodginess is here with no recent recorded workouts.
6) Jack Milton - John Velazquez, 122 lbs, Todd Pletcher - Unraced as a two-year-old, the War Front colt is lightly raced with 2 wins in 3 starts, including a big win last out in the Transylvania (III), emerging from off-the-pace to snuff out recent stakes winners Up With the Birds and Redwood Kitten. A solid pace benefits him as he takes a slight cutback from his usual race distance... will he get it? Likely. Is he pound-for-pound the same or better than some others? That remains to be seen in this class test.
7) Rydilluc - Edgar Prado, 122 lbs, Gary Contessa - A keen favorite of mine, the Medaglia d'Oro colt flattened all comers in the 9-furlong Palm Beach Stakes (III) then tried poly in the Blue Grass (I), Worthy of note: he's beaten Charming Kitten soundly and has won all 3 of his turf starts including 2 at this distance. Look for him near or setting the pace. Classier than his G3 ranking suggests, the bay colt will be in his comfort zone at these conditions, with Prado shipping up to ride.
8) Charming Kitten - Joel Rosario, 122 lbs, Todd Pletcher - Obviously, this Kitten doesn't like dirt as most Kitten's Joy babies do, so back to the grass he goes with hot jock Joel Rosario riding. Before his 9th in the Kentucky Derby, Charm only fell off the board once in his poly and turf starts, He won the 1 1/16-mile Kitten's Joy Stakes back in January, and has been bested by fellow runner Rydilluc in the past. Kittens are always a good bet on the turf, but I'm presuming everyone else in the betting crowd knows this tidbit. I don't consider him the best of the Pletcher duo, so I'm going to go ahead and say "not worth it."
Top 3 Picks in Order:
1) Rydilluc (3-1)
2) Noble Tune (2-1)
3) Jack Milton (5-1)
Invaders look the best, and honestly, if you're going to hate on Rydilluc for that Blue Grass showing, he really wasn't all that bad considering he's more turfy and lasted that long on a course that did not favor speed horses. I find him to be completely unreal on the grass, and Noble Tune will be his biggest concern. Given that Noble Tune has a rail post (which I never truly like) and will need a little space and pace to kick into, he's naturally disadvantaged. Jack Milton is the best of the Pletchers and has tremendous upside to tack on another win.
Value Pick: Jack Milton will be overlooked somewhat thanks to Charming Kitten. Triple Cross is an interest long long shot.
Derby Horses
Charming Kitten and Kyjack. Yes.
