I feel there’s two types of fanfiction one is the one you’re saying but in the other he’s this cute, loving, selfless guy and I swear the first scene always sets the tone for the rest of it and that’s why I start so many fics and only finish some. I hate that dick dean is such a popular trope.

I hate it when they write Dean being so macho is so ooc and it makes me really uncomfortable. I feel you.

Ugh this is such a problem. People more and more seem to be taking his “kind of a dick sometimes” attitude and turning it into “macho assface abuser” and I find it so disheartening. I’ve only been able to read stuff written by a few of my friends lately as every random fic I try to read is disgusting.
Agreed. I noticed it’s been like this since s9? Like, fics still had Dean being a bit of a dick before then, but definitely not to the extent he has been lately. And It seems as though this is the norm for Dean in stories now. As you said, it’s bad that having him be this type of person, because it is abusive. The only time I see Dean be genuinely nice is if he talks about Sam, Cas is dying or they’re being physically intimate (basically just during sex). Which in my opinions. is incredibly sad really.
Basically when Dean’s an insensitive asshole who “Doesn’t do chick flick moments” so instead he’ll be a complete jerk instead of talking, his right to be a dick goes back to his upbringing (so that totally makes it ok), then he goes all mopey and guilty and when Cas discovers his past he forgives Dean without Dean ever apolosing in the first place, then proceeds to give Dean even more devotion and love despite Dean having been a dick to him the whole majority of the story?
I mean adkjfhgakdjhg I read only AU fics because I want to escape from Canon!Dean and have a Dean who can be more carefree because he’s not apart of the spn universe. If people can happily have their Nerd!Dean/Punk!Cas, Omega!Cas/Alpha!Dean or whatever other trope they love, why is it so hard to find a story where Dean isn’t a complete tool and treats Cas with affectionate words and still be who he is. It is possible. I’ve seen good in Dean even in the show, but people only seem to write the bad? and turn the bad into the lovers spat or the plot of the story.
This all comes back to me just wanting a story that is Cas-Centric and not always about Dean. Considering all the crap that Cas is suffering through and all his insecurities, ptsd and self-worth issues, none of that is ever thought to be put in fics. ever. It’s as if it doesn’t exist at all, so it’s just never written.
Which is ironic because in the show Cas’s problems are never brought up/talked about/mentioned ever but Dean’s problems always are. So it’s always about Dean in fics? And Cas reassuring him. And it makes me so mad because I feel that Cas will never get what he deserves + what he deserves from Dean.
i’m sorry. I’m just… very passionate about this topic.
The only way to read a story that’s cas-centric is to read either omega!Cas/OOC!Cas/Sub!cas (though dean is usually a horribly mean Dom) or fics where cas is brutally raped/abused/hurt.
i could rant about this all day tbh. i have so many more unspoken points as to why this angers and upsets me. i just. am gonna make myself stop.
