"We're going to talk about this right now, or I'm gone."

Joan was proud her voice didn’t shake. The kitchen island stood between them, and her wallet was clutched in one hand and her keys in the other.

“You’re gonna walk out of your own place? Way to tip your hand, Joanie.” Liam staggered against the high stools, his words slurring and eyes losing focus as the drug took hold. “You do wha’ you want. An’ so will I.” He collapsed on the couch, letting his head fall back. She clenched her keys in her fist until their bite forced the waiting tears from her eyes. 

When she came back the next day, the stereo was gone and her jewelry box dumped on the bed. Out of frustration, no doubt, as she’d already emptied it and moved the valuable things to her locker at the hospital a few weeks before, after the tv mysteriously “broke”. The plastic bag from the hardware store clanked when she set it down on the island, and she silently thanked her uncle for teaching her how to install new locks.

in response to my call for birthday prompts, charmingnotdarling asked for "post nutmeg break up" and here is the result which I suspect is not what was intended:

Joan stood in the foyer. "This isn't working for me," she said as she put her lock picks away, all too aware that Sherlock had given them to her when she first started down this path.

Sherlock sat at the lock table and didn't look up. "Don't be vague," he snapped, scowling at files spread in front of him.

"You. Me. Working together. We're not partners. That's your doing. Until you undo it, I'm done. I have no problem mentoring Kitty, as she chooses. But your 'volunteering,' your butting-in unasked; that's over." She shut the door firmly behind her.

[Sherlock, does in fact, take Kitty and Zachary to TMONH for the insect exhibit... Only Kitty texts Joan and asks her to meet them there]

Sherlock and the two budding lovebirds have barely crossed the threshold into the museum, the only things in sight being the slowly-moving queue in front of the ticket desk and the massive, brown skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus. If ever called on it, he'll blame the roar that is the collective murmuring of the writhing mass of tourists confusing his senses, but it isn't until he feels the distinctive vibrations of her ridiculously heeled footwear that he realizes Watson has settled into the space just behind him.

"Oh," he says. "Of course." Her only response is a tiny smirk and a nod at Kitty's small wave.

Forty-five minutes later, they're all four of them exiting the insect exhibit. Kitty looks straight at him and Watson, tells them thank you, then jogs a few steps to catch up with Zachary. She hands him the museum map and asks him if he has any interest in the space section.

"Sounded pretty final," Watson says from his left side. Sherlock frowns, trying to drag his thoughts away from London as he watches them vanish by degrees. Watson brushes his elbow with her own. "Come on. I'll buy you a hot dog."

They take their cart offerings to the park. A young man on a skateboard wearing a t-shirt with a suit of armor on it blows the dust from a two year old memory. "We were meant to go to a museum once," he says.

"Never got there in the end." She doesn't miss a beat. It's possible she started reminiscing about that Arms and Armor exhibit even earlier, maybe from the time she entered the museum. "That jerk angel of death."

This is a conversation. He should say something about that case, or the last one they worked with the map. Something about how her contributions continue to be vital.

Her phone announces an incoming text. "Sorry," she says as she reads. "This client wants to push our meeting up from tomorrow evening to tonight. I have to run." She stows the phone, pointing a finger at him. "Wait for Kitty to say she needs you. Otherwise, leave her alone, okay?"

"I am a champion in the area of self-restraint," he replies.

FIRST

[first two sentences of my a current project. Not the same one as yesterday's LAST and NEXT entries.]

Joan set the cardboard box on the bed and glared at it, defeated. She only escaped being 20 minutes late to meet Marcus that morning because he’d been stuck in a traffic jam affecting seven blocks in three directions, involving a giant RV, a garbage truck, and a stalled Honda, if she recalled his rant correctly.

Questions 3.&4.

3. What fic was the hardest to write?

That was Tipping Point, because of the subject matter (reference to human trafficking of children); I'm squeamish about writing any sexual content, and abusive situations are that much worse, even as hand-wavy as I was. I wanted to do right by the topic. The flashback in that story is also still my head canon for Sherlock's adolescence (still not jossed, woo!), and I wanted to make a good case for that.

4. What’s the fic you really loved that doesn’t get as much attention as the others?

I don't have a stand-out favorite for myself like that, but I don't know why Dark and Deep part 10, No Other Way, has the fewest hits of the entire series. It's my attempt to fill in the biggest gap in the season one finale, for me: what Watson did after Sherlock said he was leaving New York with Irene.

Some day I might do a brazen self-promotion post linking to some of the "Doubts Don't Deter Detectives" shorts I like best. It's entirely my own fault that folks don't find them, given how I buried them in the avalanche of daily prompt fills. If I'm feeling really brazen/brave, I'll ask people to tell me which were their favorites first...

She's being such a good friend. And it is the worst thing she could be doing for his mental state.
