According to the site, the piece was (unfortunately) intended as a monument to William Henry Vanderbilt because of his wealth and international influence. I like it much better separated from that legacy and imagine it as tribute to the beauty of the heavens and earth.
I spent about 15 minutes gazing at it on my last visit to the Met. If the museum gift shop sold a full-size replica (the top is about 1x1.5 meters), I'd sell all my other furniture to buy one.

Elementary fans I need assistance. Does anyone remember the fanedit (I assume it was a fan edit) where all of the times Sherlock wakes up Joan are put together and there's voiceover & graphics that make it seem like a commercial for a pill or something that helps you wake up?
I have tried various times over the years to seat h for it but no combination of "elementary Watson wake up commercial" gets me what im looking for.

Sometimes I wonder if "Smoking is aesthetic!" people are just really young and don't remember what it was like when smoking in public places was far more common.
(Fair disclaimer: I lost close relatives to lung cancer and pneumonia worsened by long term smoking damage, so I was never going to like it. But I'm just talking about the aesthetic.)
The yellow cigarette butts everywhere, killing wildlife and making everything messy and ugly--it was the most common litter. The way nicotine coats furniture and windows in a sickly film. The stench of it, the way if you went to a nightclub Saturday night you would wash your hair three times Sunday morning and it would still stink from absorbed smoke. The way food tastes different/worse when the smell of people smoking fills the room. What it tastes like to kiss someone who has been smoking. Ash trays full of ash and butts. The way a smoker's perspiration smells funky, and then being on a bus or train on a hot day surrounded by people smelling like that.
It was all just really grim, and every now and then I am struck with how much cleaner and more pleasant it is to be in an outdoor mall or university campus or pub, places that used to be crammed with people smoking. God, even the relative lack of cigarette butts alone is miraculous.
Aesthetic my arse. But it's easier to romanticise something reasonably rare.
As someone whose mother died of lung cancer from smoking, "the aesthetic" can bite my shiny metal ass.
i wish there was an easier way to tell the difference between an "if it sucks hit da bricks" situation and a "sometimes being an adult means doing things that you dont wanna" situation
The best answer to this that I've seen is "You are free to do whatever you like. You must only live with the consequences."
"If it sucks, hit da bricks" is for when you realize that you actually definitely can live with the consequences of Not Doing The Thing.
"Sometimes being an adult means doing things that you don't wanna" is for when you've thought it over and it turns out you would strongly prefer NOT to live with the consequences of Not Doing The Thing.

That meme of posting gifs from your favourite movies without including identifying text makes no sense to me.
My dash shows me all kinds of posts from folks I purposely chose to follow because you all have interesting things to share here. Why would I not want to know what movies you enjoy especially if they happen to be films I have not seen and probably cannot identify from the gifs you carefully selected. Several folks on my dash have posted theirs and I don't mean to single out anybody specifically. (You've all annoyed me equally is what I'm saying, possibly sarcastically.)
And yes I could message everyone individually to beg for scraps but I'm too annoyed by the premise of the meme to do it. grumble.

if you think this is an exaggeration or splitting hairs where it doesn't matter:
i used to work at a Local Organic Produce store that's popular with the lefties in my city who are interested in food justice. i quit for a lot of reasons, mostly the boss, but something i will always remember is one of our suppliers coming in to drop off produce, being told her check wasn't ready, and her laughing and responding it didn't matter -- even a low bank account was more than enough to pay the migrants who picked her produce. i am not filling in any blanks here. she said this.
after quitting, this was a common story i told people about my time there. some then became annoyed at me, acting like i was a wokescold trying to undermine the store's "eco" mission with unrelated "ethical" concerns. but, like -- if food justice isn't for the people making food, who the fuck is it for?
like, don't get me wrong. my contention here is that the things go hand in hand, and that something which is unethical isn't actually eco. after all, humans are a part of the fucking ecosystem, and if a product can only be made by unsustainably exploiting humans, then it's unsustainable. doesn't matter which chemicals were used in making it, or whether or not animals were factory farmed.
they *cannot* be separated. a product cannot be either eco or ethical — it must be both. a product that is made through human suffering cannot be eco for the reasons you said; a product that causes human suffering by contributing to the destruction of the ecosystem cannot be ethical. it must be both and we must insist on both

people who are trans deserve the right to transition, not because it’s a medical treatment or because dysphoria can be classified as a mental illness but because we’re human beings who should be allowed to do whatever the fuck we want to our own bodies! this is a basic human right!

yoga
Now that I've taken a yoga class, I can truly say that yoga DOES deserve the hype
with two BIG caveats: number one, I don't think I would have benefited at all from it 5 years ago. I think I was able to get a lot out of it because I'd already gone through a journey of learning that my body and its feelings and reactions weren't the enemy.
Back when I had a more antagonistic relationship with my body and I was still keeping all my trauma bottled up and tamped down, I think it would have been very frustrating to try to do yoga.
The second BIG caveat is that it depends hugely on the instructor and some yoga practices are basically "exercise" in that it's supposed to be actively "hard" and you're expected to push/force your body through distress.
One thing that is really helpful to me about yoga is that you don't push to the outer extremity of your limits.
The mentality of exercise is doing things with your body that are as hard as you can possibly tolerate, for as long as you possibly can, as determined by your force of will and ability to ignore pain. Yoga was very different because instead of straining my willpower to the absolute limit, it encouraged me to be highly aware of what parts of my body were being challenged and engaged. Instead of pushing that to the point of the worst distress I could stand, I was encouraged to explore the bodily experience mentally and notice how my muscles and joints worked together, how they held or released tension and how my emotions reacted.
I had some really strong emotional reactions to yoga. A lot of these were positive. I loved my instructor, but there was an instructional video we were assigned and also a guest instructor that made me really upset and angry. Like, "ruining my whole day" angry.
And it was the same kind of thing in both cases: they were making it into a sort of "push through the pain" exercise class mentality, purposefully trying to get to the limits of what your body can tolerate, instead of like. meditative and engaging with your body.
The most common and consistent comment I get on my writing is that it's visceral. On i am an exit (the Buckyfic) I've gotten so many comments to the effect of "wow your descriptions of bodily experiences of pain and emotions are so vivid and intense." I also get "gut-wrenching" a lot.
This is interesting to me because I'm not trying to make it intense, I'm trying to make it accurate. The rest of my experience with life suggests to me that there is something unusually visceral and intense about my actual experience of my own body. Even before I knew i was autistic, I had a ferocious, hateful awareness that I was more sensitive to literally everything than everyone else.
I think I latched onto certain aspects of the exercise mentality too strongly: when I was in martial arts, I very much showed up every day with the mentality that I was going to push myself as hard as I possibly could and get as close to my physical and mental limits as possible.
I LIKED martial arts, it made me feel strong and capable, and the ability to mentally dominate my own body by "pushing through the pain" was definitely part of that.
Looking back on myself as a kid I'm amazed at two things: how much distress I was in and how much I hated myself about it. I felt like I deserved to have something horrible happen to me, for, I don't know, being terrified by nearly every aspect of being alive?
My child self is like some kind of shining beacon of power and light to me: filled with terror beyond anything the hearts of the adults around me could make, yet indomitably serene, brash, and unselfconscious.
I don't want to be presumptuous and tell you (op or other readers of this post) things you already know, so if this doesn't apply to you feel free to ignore it.
What is described above as the mentality of excersise, of working as hard as you possibly can, is a dangerous (as in damaging) mentality to have, and quite distressing to hear about. Whats described as the mentality of yoga, of challenging your body and being aware of how it is challenged, is much better.
Excersise should not be working as hard as you possibly can, as long as you possibly can, this is an easy way to injure yourself. Excersise should be challenging, not painful. (Though if you have sensory difficulties or chronic pain this can be difficult to achieve.) If you're not used to this approach, and can't articulate the difference between an appropriate challenge and a harmful challenge, what I would recommend is striving for perfect form.
Read books or watch videos to learn good form, and then exercise in front of a mirror, or phone, or friend to check your form. Work relatively slowly with exaggerated precision, and repeat the exercise until you can no longer retain perfect form, then stop. Thats your benchmark, and when you are doing sets of this exercise you should try to get within one or two reps of that number every time.
For example, push ups are a fairly well known exercise that most people can picture in their mind, even if they're not something I would recommend for someone just starting out. Imagine doing push-ups. You don't want to keep pushing until your shoulder and chest are burning, your arms are shaking, your back is bowing, etc. Thats how you hurt yourself. You want to do them slowly and evenly until your form is less than perfect. As you get tired, you might shift your hips up or down so your back and legs are no longer aligned; this puts your torso at a different angle to your arms, and engages slightly different muscles in your shoulders. This is a naturalresponse, it gives the muscles you have been using a bit of a rest, and allows less tired muscles to take up more weight. Similarly, you might bow your back or round your shoulders or something else. This is your sign that this is enough reps in your set. Call it there and rest for a couple minutes and see if you can do the same number of reps for a second or third set; though if you're just starting out maybe you can't get that high again, its ok to do slightly less each set too.
Learning to listen to your body is a difficult skill, and takes a long time, so don't be discouragedif you don't get it immediately. I've been practicing for years and i still make mistakes occasionally. (In fact right now I'm taking a break from exercising because I hurt my shoulder) Most people learn this skill throughout early childhood, so if you were unable to do that you might need to practice a lot. But I still think its a valuable skill to learn. Take care of yourself out there!

I was talking yesterday about how I should probably change the skin colour of a character in a not-yet-written book, because that character is a large, aggressive dragon-shifter and I was worried about her being read with unintentional and offensive subtext.
I haven't gotten my hands on Writing the Other yet (it's still in the mail!) but from reading my way through these articles and watching the Princess Weekes video, I now understand that 'white-ifying' a character you're worried about is a lazy and cowardly solution. so, if I do ever finish the book Eres loses Everything, I'll keep her as is, do my best to be thoughtful, and hire a sensitivity reader to pick out any blind spots.
