Mikami's Judgement: Library of Woe (working title): Part I
So, this film, at least, that's what I suspect it has, has opened with a hackneyed plot device; a loss of conciousness and an awakening in unfamiliar surroundings with a gaggle of complete strangers. This plot setup is about as old as World War One, and only about half as pleasant to be involved in. With this cheery forecast, allow me to begin.
So, like any good, or bad film, it continues, introducing the antagonist, a vague and undoubtedly powerful figure who has decided for unknown reasons to attempt to replicate a terrible event that happened many years ago. The effects are certainly impressive, with a full-scale moving animatronic of Monobear, the now famous icon for what is historically termed 'The Despair Incident'
But you're not reading this review for a history lesson, or at the very least if you are I'm afraid you must be a bit lost, so allow me to continue. This work of historical-inspired psychological thriller reality takes a fascinating twist when the kidnapped teenagers are all ordered to murder each other, a process that will no doubt be captured on the many, many, many, cameras everywhere in the library. Yes, everywhere. Yes, even there.
It's an interesting approach to camera work, I admit. Why bother with professional cameramen or camera rigs when you can just put a load of fucking cameras everywhere and choose the footage that looks the least like it was filmed through a camel's anus.
To properly rate this experience, I would have to discuss the characters; Yasu Ieyasu, an angry girl who ought to work on her violence and anger management issues and who very rudely dragged me around on the floor for the heinous crime of existing and demanded I help her and her ragtag group of acquaintances with doing.... something. I never figured out what.
Sonya Channing, an initially abrasive and rude foreigner who very crudely mocked my excellent taste in film before becoming slightly more rational to the extent that she was able to bestow upon me the most singular and rare of pleasures, that of learning something new about film.
Setsuna Emo-kun a person of indeterminate gender who really ought to get some clothes that seem less like they belong on the child of an American CIA agent and a French avant-garde director, but who has an interesting viewpoint on films, a sense of humour lacked by many other people in this place, and a generally agreeable personage overall. Also less violent and shouty than their female compatriots, so that's a thing.
After a bizarre encounter where I helped to reorganize a DVD section, and when I say helped I mean did the entire thing on my own, I, out of fear of my life and for no other reason, followed the party to breakfast, as Eisuke Hanake, a rather alarmingly large boy who is apparently my roommate, prepared an excellent rice dish.
The highlight of the scene was my meeting with Hotaru Hitoya, child star and actress extraordinaire, whereupon we shared a remarkably friendly and interesting conversation on the merit of her work, which concluded with my promise to continue to criticize and hers to continue to improve.
All in all, although I came worryingly close on a number of occasions, I have as yet escaped every encounter with an intimidating and loud person unscathed, more than I can say for the participants in the first incident.
All in all, this instalment merits a fair HOLY SHIT SOMEBODY GET US OUT OF HERE BEFORE SOMEONE DIES out of ten.
Breakdancing, Broken Bottles, and Robbie, What Are you Doing in the Bathroom if You're Not Peeing? {Chatzy Summary}
Here is what happened during out last chatzy. Events can be found below the cut.
Everyone arrived, Blaise and Jordan being the first to show up. Jake and Kane followed, then Amy.
Wyatt realized he had all his family photos out, trying to tuck them away though Blaise and Amy noticed them, commenting.
Jake and Kane entered the kitchen to get a beer, Jake asking if he had a fight with Blaise or if he was just permanently being a dick to him.
Robbie showed up a little late after having to help his dad. In the midst of speaking to Blaise, "I am not a little shit if anything I am a big shit." was said.
Blaise asked Jordan if he could have a sip of her beer, making Kane question if he should be having that at all.
After a comment from Blaise, he then left into the kitchen with Amy and Robbie not wanting to be around Jake and Kane. The tension however lingered.
Jordan told Kane that he wasn't doing a good job at fixing things with Blaise. Blaise, while in the kitchen with Robbie and Amy got asked if he was fine or not. He stormed out into the backyard.
Wyatt followed Blaise out, and then Jordan too, passing on the fact that Robbie and Amy were worried about him.
Blaise and Wyatt started talking about Cody and how they spilled soda over a bunch of girls back in the day. The memory caused Jordan to stay silent from the pain of Cody's memory.
Robbie excused himself from Amy and Kane's conversation about Blaise using the line, "Excuse me guys, the big shit is gonna go pee."
Paige busted through the door, calling out that the party arrived.
Blaise asked Wyatt if he boned Paige yet, Wyatt saying he almost did. Blaise asked for details. Wyatt said his mom interrupted, the exact quote beng, "ooh donuts and no sex."
Robbie called out to greet Paige from the bathroom, making it clear that he wasn't peeing while talking to her. Paige then asked what the hell was he doing.
Blaise started making out with Jordan in the backyard as Wyatt came inside to talk to Paige.
Amy, Robbie, and Kane noticed Blaise and Jordan making out. Jordan noticed them staring.
Amy walked away from the scene, offering to dance with Paige.
Blaise noticed Kane as one of the people staring, thinking he may actually be jealous. Jordan and Blaise return inside.
As Paige offered to teach Robbie breakdancing, Blaise sneaked off to down a beer. Kane noticed his disappearance and immediately confronted him.
Robbie tried to break dance, failing miserably.
Kane and Blaise wound up arguing, the dispute ending in Blaise shoving Kane into the pantry and then storming out.
Paige dropped next to Wyatt on the couch, saying that the party wasn't a party until Blaise got pissed about something. Wyatt replied by saying that rehab was supposed to help with his temper.
Jordan followed Blaise, not wanting him to be alone after exploding.
Wyatt and Paige stayed on the couch discussing that he was being weird.
Kane, Robbie, and Amy discussed what happened. Amy was taken aback by the violence, thinking to memories of her father and home life.
Amy sent Robbie a text saying they needed to talk and headed outside to the backyard waiting for him to arrive.
Kane said he should leave, saying goodbye to Wyatt and Paige, but Paige said he'd be lame if he left so Kane decided to stay.
While he was talking to Paige, Amy was talking to Robbie about her concerns of the evening. She leaned her head on his shoulder and OMFG ROMY.
Wyatt wound up getting beers for both Paige and Kane, though after some time, Kane left.
Paige was the first to arrive, getting drunk quite early on. As the mavs showed up, they met each other somewhere in the middle of the dance floor.
Aislinn showed up, getting mixed reactions from everyone there. Wyatt openly disapproved, glancing at her once and then focusing on Paige.
Kane and Jordan started talking about Kane's relationship with Jake at the bar over drinks.
Aislinn and Jake took N10 tablets. They conversed briefly, Aislinn admitting that Jake was one of the very few she could stand out of the Mavericks. She spent the night snorting drugs with a guy she had come with from school.
The entire rave was getting Robbie anxious. He also wore a very stylish sweater vest.
Amy got lost in the crowd initially, though made her way back after a horrible conversation gone wrong with a party goer.
Kane and Jake get high on the tablets of acid that Blaise had given Kane earlier in the week.
Jordan and Robbie go to the bathroom, walking in on Blaise coming out from the girls bathroom after having fucked a girl, and not the first one that night either. It flew over Robbie's head however and he rushed into the bathroom to puke.
Blaise and Jordan eventually brought Robbie back to the bar, though Kane and Jake were both concerned with how he looked, offering to go outside with him for air.
Jordan and Blaise danced on the floor together, but as she asked Blaise about how he likes Jake and Kane together, he got angry and fast.
After getting outside, Kane and Robbie talk about space, the acid hitting Kane hard while Jake observed the pair of them, not comprehending a single thing they were saying. Robbie insisted that Jake come with them to space.
Blaise told Jordan how he threatened Jake to stay away from Kane and he didn't understand why Kane would prefer Jake over him.
Wyatt came over to the pair, asking if anyone had seen Paige. Though her and Amy were lost in the crowd, dancing.
Kane, Jake, and Robbie eventually returned inside, heading for the bar though Jake immediately panicked as he noticed Blaise sitting there.
Robbie and Kane offer to take Jake outside, though Robbie was unsure that anything would happen because he had seen Blaise exiting the girl's bathroom earlier.
Jordan immediately picked up on the tension between the group and did her best to create a distraction before Blaise let loose on Jake. He already couldn't promise to not go after him. Blaise followed through with it, start to kiss Jordan up against one of the walls of the warehouse.
In the midst of his high, Robbie asked Jake if he loved Kane. It followed with panic from the pair of them.
Robbie began to look for Amy, asking random people in the rave if they saw or knew her. Jake pulled him back to his seat after he asked once.
Blaise, after talking to Jordan for some time, decided to find Kane. Jordan was quick to protest, telling Blaise that Kane had gone home in order to protect both of her friends.
The effort didn't work and Blaise found Kane asking if they could talk somewhere quiet. Kane agreed, Blaise dragging Kane outside and kissing him.
Jake was left at the bar, angry at Blaise for taking Kane away. But he was distracted by someone groping Jordan, jumping in to pull her away from the stranger.
Jordan and Jake talked briefly about finding Robbie, worried about him and the effects of his anxiety medication.
Paige emerged from the crowd, a bruised and sweaty mess, craving a drink, laughing hard at the display Robbie was putting on: glasses filled with ice as maracas and his shirt tied around his forehead as a bandana.
Super big feely feels fest of Blaise telling Kane he needed him and that if Kane needed Jake more, he couldn't string him along anymore. Kane responded by saying he needed time to think and Blaise left saying he wasn't a second option.
Jordan noticed Kane return, more of a mess than he was before he left. She told Jake to go over to him, while she kept an eye on Robbie.
Blaise did three lines of coke with his friends, only coming back when Jordan texted him. But he was quick to get into a fight with a random guy at the rave, both of them going at it in the middle of the dance floor.
Jordan managed to get Blaise out, though his face was a bloodied and bruised mess.
Jake gathered up Robbie and Kane, driving Robbie home and taking Kane back to his.
The police wound up raiding the warehouse, arresting some of the party goers while many escaped through the back door or somehow made it through the front.
Everyone arrived at Robbie’s, the party starting off with brief conversation and the setting up of any drugs/alcohol the Mavericks brought.
The moment Aislinn showed up, the entire gang was confused as to who invited her, but a group consensus labeled Blaise as the culprit.
Grace and Jordan were quick to fire insults and retorts to whatever Aislinn said, not understanding why she was at the party to begin with. Aislinn did the same. At first, Wyatt, Jake, and Kane found the banter to be amusing, but as time went on, it grew more annoying than anything.
The room quickly became divided between Jordan, Grace, and Wyatt, while Aislinn, Jake, and Kane stayed on the opposite side. Robbie came into the main room and suggested they do something, mainly to stop the bickering. The group decided on truth and dare.
Aislinn passed out from drinking too much whiskey and was taken to another room to sleep it off for the remainder of the evening.
Jordan left due to a family emergency.
Robbie had the first dare and gave Grace a lap dance.
Grace was then dared to do her best impression of Blaise which got the entire gang laughing.
Grace then dared Kane to kiss the prettiest person in the room. Knowing it was a trap to kiss Grace, he kissed Jake instead, pissing off Grace.
Kane then asked Jake a truth, what was the weirdest dream he ever had, and he responded with Grace actually being nice.
Before the next round of dares or truths could be handed out, Blaise showed up, hammered out of his mind and carrying a handful of booze. Robbie helped him get settled in and he was quick to make his presence noted by kissing Grace.
Blaise then made things awkward between Amy and Robbie by asking them why they weren’t dating yet?
There was tension in the room from Blaise’s and Kane’s earlier argument though both of them said nothing.
Grace and Blaise then went into Robbie’s guest room to have sex. Blaise asks Grace why Kane won’t sleep with him and Grace says she’s been having the same problem and that he’s missing out on them both.
Kane and Jake stayed in Robbie’s bedroom, talking and drinking.
Robbie and Amy went downstairs to talk about what Blaise had said about them dating.
Amy ran upstairs to interrupt Grace and Blaise’s actions, pretending to look for an item that didn’t exist. Her interrupting them pissed off Blaise and he walked out to find Jake on Kane’s lap, the boys kissing rather intensely.
Blaise, jealous that Kane was kissing Jake, started yelling at Kane. Kane immediately stood his ground which resulted in a fist to his jaw. A fight ensued between Kane and Blaise,
Robbie shouted for them to cut it out and not break his house.
Amy got scared due to memories of her abusive father. Jake tried to comfort her.
Wyatt went to find Grace in the bedroom that Blaise had left her in, them ignoring the altercation altogether.
Blaise made a move for Jake, Kane shoving him out of the way to protect Jake. Jake called for Wyatt who attempted to pull Blaise off of Kane. But it failed and Blaise punched Kane repeatedly, breaking his nose and leaving his face both bloody and swollen.
Kane, Robbie, and Amy told Blaise to leave and he did, Wyatt following him out.
Robbie and Jake conversed about what to do with Kane, ultimately deciding on taking him to the hospital due to his face being fucked. Jake decided to drive him while Robbie took care of fixing his house.
Wyatt tried to talk to Blaise, but was ultimately told off. Wyatt got up, not wanting to deal with Blaise and left him drunk on the gutter.
Jake took Kane to the hospital, Kane needing both bandages and stitches to heal his broke nose. He then stayed at Jake’s for the night, not wanting to go home and deal with his dad who would be more than pissed.
Blaise drove home drunk, but managed to get there, curling up on his bed and crying.
Wyatt fell asleep in the yard, drawing a big what the fuck from Robbie’s parents in the morning.
