This is now Horse#3, for no reason except this was the armature I grabbed to start trying out Chavant clay. It's a soft oil-based plastiline clay that doesn't dry out. It's proving to be too soft for my purposes, but I have a grey block of Chavant too, which should be a bit harder. I'm taking the time to practice head sculpting, whilst listening to my favourite podcast, the Infinite Monkey Cage

#35: Frills⁠ ⁠ Fun with layering. Working on getting good contrast and depth quickly. I really liked how rough and organic it looked early on, like an alien landscape, but sadly it lost a lot of that liveliness while I worked to refine it. Trying to recapture it by adding subtextures just ended up making it look fussy. Perhaps because there only 1 size of sub-feature, and it needs more variation? #53: Positive⁠ ⁠ This was fun, making impressions in a surface with the edge of a wire loop tool, trying to align them to make crosses and to make those crosses flow across an undulating surface. #52: Linenfold⁠ ⁠ This one's inspired by a traditional wood panelling embellishment - a surprisingly easy-to-execute design that gives disproportionately impressive results. It's nice not to have to worry about grain ;). ⁠ ⁠ It was an interesting exercise in what kind of shapes are best achieved by carving (the long grooved tops of the folds), which by carving-then-shaping (sides of folds), and which by shaping-then-trimming (ends of folds).
