Ephemeral FOR SALE ~ The Mystery of 1948 * Mellon National Bank Trust Bag * Check Book * The DAME ???
https://www.ebay.com/itm/384675435590
Here are 3 items that came together when I purchased a box of paper goodies at our local flea market.
Unidentified as to the owner or who is the woman in the photograph. The plot thickens as they say...
Included are
1. Coin bag from Mellon National Bank and Trust Company, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Very good condition, looks unused. It's folded twice and has a cloth attached tie-ups. Measures 12 x 6.5 inches.
2. A 1/3 used check book, also drawn on Mellon National Bank and Trust Company, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, East Pittsburgh Office - 25. There are 34 unused checks still attached to the book, and 16 attached check stubs with spending tally and notations of date, and purchases. Date starts Nov 2, 1948 with a balance of 1944.10, the purchase of an air compressor for $160. That's quite a sum for the mid 20th century. Last purchase was on Nov 19, 1948 with an ending balance of $800.00. The nature of the spending was to set up an automotive type business, and so perhaps these were temp checks after the bank loaned $2000 to start their business. There are also notations on the inside front cover. There are many more details to decipher for the sleuth.
3. A tinted photograph of a pretty lady "The Dame" in a fur coat. 6 x 8 inches in good condition, lower left corner is bent, with a slight 1/8th inch closed tear. Could be an aspiring starlet, a wife or a mistress, or even the owner of the new business. Girl power in the late 40s. Sure, she was a renegade. Back side is not unmarked.
You decide the plot of these unique ephemeral items. Fun stuff for writers and paper collectors.
-- Defects: Checkbook is partially used, photo has a bent corner. All else good to very good.
