qb’s 2017 seasonal anime of the year countdown 11-20

2017 was a Big year for anime and I had a lot of thoughts about it and they took a while to gather since I’m busy. Here are my top 11-20 recommendations for seasonal (1 or 2 cours) animes from 2017. I started with 11-20 on my list because I’m not posting all of them at once and it would be way too long otherwise. Not reverse order this time because this list isn’t very climactic. 

11 - Action Heroine Cheer Fruits

I subscribed to HIDIVE for an entire season only for this exclusive, and Action Heroine Cheer Fruits was worth every penny. It’s a modestly charming show about girls forming a club to perform superhero stage plays for kids, even if they only have the budget for cardboard costumes. It’s surprising in many ways, bucking trends associated with this sort of anime and making effective use of its extremely limited budget, much like the eponymous Cheer Fruits themselves.

12 - MMO Junkie

Solid romance anime starring a 30 year old gamer lady. Excellent OP and ED that are both catchy, plays with how we interact online in relevant and interesting ways. This one was fun to watch along with other people on Crunchyroll and it was nice to have a mainstream anime that you can point and say “this stars an older woman and is hecka good”. Director turned out to be a Nazi though so it’s less of an easy recommendation now unfortunately. 

13 - Tsuki ga Kirei

It’s a solid, charming, completely normal romance anime. Nothing else to say about it, doesn’t really have any missteps. Paced well and looks really nice.

14 - Grimoire of Zero

A solid fantasy series that instead of dipping briefly into more mature and adult themes like this genre so often does, deliberately delves into difficult topics as the fabric of the story itself. Both main characters are adults who’d been around the block, and act like it, reminiscent of the rare kind of character writing showcased in Spice and Wolf. It’s not the most visually impressive anime, but it was a well-executed twist on a genre I thought I was completely done with, and it manages to conclude in a satisfying manner which is again unexpected for the fantasy genre.

15 - Vatican Miracle Examiners

Vatican Miracle Examiners is a beautiful mess of gay priests solving the most ridiculous murders and debunking religious mysteries that escalates into the stratosphere over its run. It never quite reaches the same heights as the first case’s double-headed hitler baby demon, but I was still more than satisfied with the overall experience. The second half may wane on you if you’re not actively shipping the priests and invested in their relationship with God and each other. They’re gay4god.

16 - The Dragon Dentist

I’m a sucker for gnostic stories like The Dragon Dentist, with esoteric foretelling of your own death and the mysticism of the dragon’s teeth and fate and how that changes people and monsters transformations and all that good stuff. It’s all over the place, but all of those places look great. It’s short and available on most anime streaming services.

17 - Kemono Friends

Everything surrounding this doofy, memetic travesty of cg animation is a deeply subjective experience. It’s basically impossible to replicate the experience of this show airing out of an unknown studio to unassuming fanfare, growing to a fever pitch of popularity, ending strong and sincerely building hope for things to come, then being burnt to the ground by corporate interference. Objectively, it’s an edutainment anime that’s poorly animated by every reasonable metric, but still grew popularity beyond what anyone expected. The only remaining explanation for this is that the sincerity and heart of this ill-conceived anime produced a miracle because it certainly wasn’t any sort of traditional competency or marketing campaign that did it. But at the end of the day, I don’t think I actually learned anything from Kemono Friends? It’s on Crunchyroll if you want to know what the big deal is, but I wouldn’t recommend watching it alone.

18 - Gamers!

Gamers! is a total hot mess, but it ends up being alright at the very end once all the relationships get untangled. It’s one of the better gamer romances, which is not a high bar. 

19 - Konosuba s2

Konosuba’s not actually good, it’s frequently pretty terrible, but it’s still funny enough to make you forget that for twenty minutes. 

20 - Made in Abyss

Overall, a lot more series that I felt like discussing than last year. My top 10 is coming whenever I get to it and probably a post on year-long anime in 2017 after that.
