I know that I'm far from the first to bring up this idea, but I still love the concept that Bombur is practically irresistible by Hobbit standards.
Maybe he comes to visit Bilbo after the quest and now that the Hobbits have gotten over the initial shock of seeing dwarves in the Shire, Bombur finds himself with a lot of attention. Fauntlings following him around because he's interesting, soft spoken, and looks kind. Plenty of lasses and even some lads giving Bombur lingering looks, some flirty some shy, and making excuses to come calling at Bilbo's door when they know Bombur is visiting.
"You know," Bilbo remarks in amusement, "I've never had quite this many visitors in one day before. It's almost like there's something new attracting them."
Bombur flushes. "I haven't the slightest idea of what you're talking about," he says with all the mock indignation of someone who knows exactly what Bilbo is alluding to.
