hear me out: cherry who is the first to address the feelings between her and marcia, and marcia how is scared and pushes cherry away

like. walk with me here. we see in icttyan and justice for tulsa that when cherry breaks out of her world view and sees what’s happening between the socs and greasers, she loudly fights back and disagrees. at least as loudly as she can, by standing up to paul and volunteering at the hospital, trying to convince pony not to fight, visiting him after everything, etc.

however, marcia falls into societal pressure the easiest, she can stick up for cherry, but the moment there’s judgement on her, she falls back in fear of being othered or outcasted, primarily in jft. of course, i believe after jft, seeing what happened to two-but and then witnessing the rumble, she breaks outta this habit eventually. but she’s still terrified of being other and outcasted and alone, even if it means going against her personal morals and having a weak backbone.

therefore, when cherry finally realizes her feelings for marcia, she tells marcia. she tries to hold her hand, look her in the eyes, tell marcia that there’s something between them. but marcia pulls away, she tears up, whisper yells that they can’t, this is wrong, we aren’t like that. marcia who runs away and pushes cherry away and hides. cherry is more and more alone, more distanced from the socs, and marcia falls further into the group, trying so desperately to be the girl she’s supposed to be.

only, weeks later, to knock on cherry’s window in the middle of the night after breaking up with her boyfriend. cherry lets her in, of course, who would she be to ever be mad at marcia for this? and here in the safety of cherry’s room, marcia can finally build up her nerves to kiss her like she’s wanted to since 7th grade.
