Foolish If you’re like most music-lovers, you’re on the constant prowl to find events and soundtracks to fill your summer (see: life) with. The combination of both longer days and a convenient downgrade in responsibility leaves a sizable chunk of time for you to fill with your recreation of choice.

Like the blockbusters hitting theaters this time of year- the music scene also tends to explode with goodness for your auditory amusement. Especially in the LA and OC areas, festivals and concerts saturate the warm days and nights. This, of course, is fortunate because the festival concept is catching on and incorporating every genre from EDM to Country and everything in between.

July 13th brings that scene to Santa Ana with a twang by showcasing a mini Folk/Indie Fest at Malone’s, near Dyer and the 55 fwy. Headliners The Ultimate Bearhug, featuring Doll Knight from Canvas. Doll is co-headlining with Gene Louis and Amy Jean Davis of The Brave Ones- a modern day John & June team “both on and off the court,” if you will. Gene has also made the rounds in his band Bullets and Octane, and his wife Amy was featured on season 6 of American Idol. You’ll also have a chance to see other local favorites like Cherokee Fade and Gal Musette among new names which for all discovery purposes, it’s all I’m looking for.

Malone’s also features an awesome menu catering to Vegans and meat-lovers alike, and of course a full bar if your thirst-for-summer includes a summer thirst. I’m sure there are plenty of awesome shows coming up this summer, so don’t forget to write this one on your calendar. Foolish

Cherokee Fade is part folk, part Indie, all acoustic, and all heartfelt. The two musical minds behind Cherokee Fade are Erin Rose Belair and Kevin Elliot from “Costamazing,” California.

When listening to them, it’s hard to place them because what they do best is that their music swings across different types of folk, never landing in one style to limit their artistry. Some songs are incredibly short, under 80 seconds, but tell a complete story in minimalism (looking at you “Cassandra”). Other songs have upbeat rhythms that could be mistaken for Regina Spektor and others with contemplative downtempo from the last years of Johnny Cash.

“Waking Up (is hard to do)” is their album-titled song, and strangely enough, its melancholy is catchy. Erin and Kevin created some rhythmic verses that combine breaks and flow for a tune that follows you after you listen to the song. And its lyrics are just as haunting as it touches on depression. It’s not a happy song, but it’s damn good.

They released their first album this past winter and will be performing at the OCMAs this coming Tuesday (1/15).
