Frank was a terrible kind of sleeper. He didn’t sleep very long and it wasn’t easy for him to go to sleep either. Cheryl always let him sleep in if he ever did.
It was never easy to sneak out of his arms. Most days she couldn’t leave his iron grip. She had managed to slip away and she watched the news on the ottoman while sipping on sour instant coffee left over from the day before.
For a few minutes she didn’t hear him. She was engrossed with the terrible images that crossed the screen. Cher perked from her spot before the television. Her socks padded on the floor as she walked back to frank.
He was having a nightmare. He usually did when he slept alone. She slowly climbed into bed with him and wrapped his arm around her waist. Nearly immediately his tossing and turning began to lessen until she kissed his mouth softly to pull him from his bad dreams.
Frank groggily opened his swollen eyes. He only reluctantly pecked back after he realized where he was very slowly. He rarely ever did that. She blinked funny at him and pulled away as she stroked the side of his head with her red nails.
“Are you okay daddy?”
His hands slowly passed over her arms, her back and ultimately took her head in his hands to peck her mouth again instead of answering. Cher drew back with a sharp scratch of her claw against his scalp to try to bring him back fully to her.
“Daddy, talk to me.”
He only ever evaded her questions when his dreams were bad.
He kept his silence as he chose to roll over with her in his arms to hoard the redhead on his side where he could keep her safe from the war zone that kept firing off into the air.
