“I’m in the mood for chaos.”
The Middle of Nowhere || Open
Tori pulled her hood up over her head to protect her hair from the snow that had just started to fall. Sometimes it felt like winter would never end. She was standing on the bridge, about to head across the field but she was having second thoughts now that the snow had started. She was wearing boots that, while warm, might not be able to handle much more snow. Thing was, she didn’t want to go back to town. Sometimes it was nice to get away from it all, be by herself.
She started walking again, reaching the wooden fence in no time. She smiled slightly as she jumped up and climbed over it, recalling the time she and Chrissy had come this way to get to the party in the abandoned barn a year or so ago. It had been a good night, she was sure, but she couldn’t really remember a lot of it. She knew that she’d ended up wandering the woods for a while but she couldn’t recall if she was with someone, or alone. Only once she’d sobered up did she realise that wandering the woods when blind drunk had been a ridiculous idea. She was always doing ridiculous things without thinking.
Tori sighed, blowing air through her lips, as she stomped across the snowy field. She’d just been in the forest, somewhere she did often go, but there was a place in there where she sometimes liked to go and sit when she had things on her mind. It would be better if she had a dog to take with her so she could pretend she was walking it, but to be honest… Tori knew she wouldn’t ever be bothered to walk it in the first place. She was much more concerned with her social life and feeling superior to everybody else than she was about looking after another living creature. She’d even given up on fish after about a day when she was younger. Of course her father had taken care of them but he was busy with the paper and they’d always died quickly. She’d given up after that.
The snow fluttering delicately to the ground outside was probably pretty to most people but to Tori Wright it was nothing but a nuisance. She hated winter, it was her least favourite time of year. Usually people she knew loved Autumn and Winter but Tori was in love with the Summer… though, now that she tried to think about it she found that she couldn’t really remember what Summer felt like. Which was weird but it was probably just because this Winter had been dragging on longer than most though it had pretty much just begun. Even Christmas always left her feeling unsatisfactory and she was sure it would be even worse this year now that she and Thomas weren’t together any longer. The thought of Thomas brought about uncomfortable feelings that Tori didn’t like to dwell on. She preferred to pretend that everything was fine, that she didn’t miss him one little bit, because if she did surely that would be showing weakness. Tori Wright wasn’t weak, not in the slightest. She wasn’t one of those girls who cried over boys or got lonely… but even still, sometimes she felt like she was stuck in the middle of nowhere and everyone else was miles away.
With another heavy sigh she brushed thoughts of Thomas to one side and continued on her way back into town.
