In 1967, the Youngbloods released their version of the song titled "Get Together". It became a minor Hot 100 hit for them, peaking at number 62 and reaching 37 on the US adult contemporary chart. It was re-released a few years later, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 on June 10, 1969.
Chet Powers originally wrote the song in 1964 and it was recorded as "Let's Get Together" by the Kingston Trio that June. A version of the song first broke into the top forty in 1965, when We Five released their own version.
When the Youngbloods song was first released, it was a huge hit in San Francisco where the hippies in Haight-Ashbury adopted its themes of love and togetherness as an alternative to the war in Vietnam. By 1969 the hippie culture and anti-war movement had spread across the entire country and the song was embraced by millions.

What About Me?
The Youngbloods "Get Together"
Jesse Colin Young has died at 83 (read the obit here). He was the singer / bassist / guitarist for the NYC band The Youngbloods. The band was most known for their 1967 cover of Chet Powers' "Get Together". The song's chorus "come one people now / smile on your brother / everybody get together / try to love one another right now" was emblematic of the anti-war movement in the 1960s. Young sang lead on it too! It was later featured in the Forrest Gump soundtrack. On Nirvana's "Territorial Pissings", it kicks off with that chorus, possibly as a way to lambast boomers for not doing more for equality that Kurt Cobain was singing about. But I digress. Young was actually from Lynn, MA before he made his way to NYC.
