Lower Cheung Sha Beach
Every university student has problems making ends meet in summers. Most of my classmates went for a summer internship, earn money while polishing up their CV a bit. Cash and EXP? It sounds more like an online game to me. I’m not turning my life into some brainless RPGs, not yet.
With little money to spend, I tried hard to discover some low-cost activities that can keep my life exciting. My friend text me in the morning and told me she wanted to go to the beach. The weather was not good at all but we weren’t able to come up with much ideas on how to spend the people-less Monday.
We got on Bus 11 at Tung Chung bus terminal and arrive at Lower Cheung Sha Beach in 30 minutes.
We walked down the beach, set up our little station and headed for the water. The water was not exactly clean and clear, but I’d say it got less rubbish than in the very famous Repulse Bay. Waves in Cheung Sha are quite big compared to other beaches in Hong Kong. In fact, they are the biggest waves I’ve seen in the city.
Sea sports are common in Cheung Sha. I saw people kayaking and surfing. But since I have little money to spend, I did not do so. BBQ and camping are common as well. A party on this beach can be quite something.
What surprised me are the animals there. Outside the beach, there were signs saying that no dogs are allowed on the beach. As I was enjoying my time in the water, a wolfdog appeared from nowhere and started running towards me. Not that I was scared or anything, I was just not well prepared for that. It was a cute little wolfdog after all.
Later, my friend asked me to bring her her mobile from her bag. I walked back to our place and searched for her phone. Suddenly, the lifeguard announced, “Please stay away from the bubbles.” I wondered what are bubbles. I guess it is something on the water probably. I looked out to the sea to check if my friend is anywhere around some sort of “bubbles”. As I look, I felt some heavy footsteps behind me. Two huge shadows slowly appeared beside me. I carefully turned to my left and saw two huge grey creatures. I was literally shocked. They slowly passed by me and one of them gave me an odd glance. When they left, my mind got clearer and I realised it wasn’t “bubbles” but “buffalos”.
I really did not expect something like this to happen in Hong Kong. Even if I heard the word “buffalos” correctly, I would have thought, “does he mean bubbles?” Their size is a triple of a wolfdog. It was my first time in life meeting a buffalo, though my face was too shocked to look impressive that brought me an odd look in exchange.
The two of them laid at the shore for the rest of the afternoon. Their shadows are beautiful and romantic. If there were fewer clouds to allow a burning sky of sunset, I really would have wanted to be that buffalo.
