Mountain Brook's Continental Bakery Plans to Open Second Location in the 'Ham
Are you a fan of Continental Bakery and Chez Lulu?
Well, get ready for some great news.
Continental Bakery plans on opening up a second location in Downtown Birmingham. It will occupy the former Mix, located in the One Federal lace building at 1820 Fourth Avenue North. Mix, formally owned by Chris Dupont has been closed for the last three years. We learn today that it was closed to make room for Carole Griffin, owner of Continental and Chez Lulu, and to better prepare for her restaurant's transition.
"I invited her in and we made a handshake agreement," Dupont told AL.com. "I said, 'You need to hang out for about three weeks or so to see what we do, to see if it's something you would be interested in.'"
Dupont added:
"She was there almost a month, watching the customers, watching our employees. We spent some time helping her employees transition. All of our staffs are working together to make sure that when she opens she has all of the information she needs to be successful."
Dupont currently manages the fine-dining restaurant Cafe Dupont and world lunch hot spot Tau Poco.
Continental Bakery, which sits in English Village in Mountain Brook, has been serving their unique European delicacies to their patrons since 1985. Chez Lulu, which opened up adjacent to Continental and is also operated by Carole Griffin, serves up a relaxed French cuisine.
Birmingham has recently added a few new eateries and grub hot spots to its list in the last couple of weeks:
A new Wendy's on Seventh Avenue South has just opened. Judging from the fancy look, the exterior architecture and layout of the drive-thru, the fast-food restaurant looks like it is a good addition to Birmingham's burgeoning Seventh Avenue district.
The owners of 2nd Avenue's popular El Barrio just opened up Paramount, which used to be a yogurt shop on the corner of 20th Street and Second Avenue North. The guys - Chris Cullen, Brian Somershield and Neville Baay - kept the name (for historic reasons, since the location used to be home to the 1930's Paramount Cigar & Soda Company), but changed the tune to its motif. They hope the spot will become a happy-hour, late-night hangout.
A very good read on Paramount's new vision can be located here.
